winner loses $54,000 jackpot at ballys

i read in todays newsday that a $54,000 slot machine winner was denied his winnings because back in 2003 he signed his name to the self exclusion list. i believe the money is donated to a fund and the casino faces a fine for allowing him to play. although that has to be difficult for the casino to police. thats got to hurt. i am sure he ran some money through the machines before he got the hit.

Personally I think the self-exclusion list should be done away with.

Yes, people have gambling problems, but people have problems with a lot of things- smoking, drinking, etc. It's unfair that the casinos are expected to patrol for these people.

As to the man, well, that stinks for him!

Gardenia- unfair to the casinos????? WHAT A JOKE!

Self exclusion isn't a perfect program, nor does it work in every case, but it can be an effective tool for someone who wants to quit.

Its ONLY one persons fault. The one who puts himself/herself on the list.

You asked for the help for your habit.

If one has an alcohol addiction is the maker responsible for making sure that person doesn't drink? Of course not. It should be no different for the casinos.

I just hope I hit a jackpot like that before I put myself on the list.

"If one has an alcohol addiction is the maker responsible for making sure that person doesn't drink? "

No, but the purveyor of the alcohol - the bar or bartender - is responsible for cutting off people who appear to have had too much to drink. In a similar fashion, casinos are responsible for cutting off addicted gamblers who have self-excluded.

"It's unfair that the casinos are expected to patrol for these people."

You may not like the way this works, you may not agree with it, but this is what casinos HAVE ALREADY AGREED TO DO as a condition of their license. So how exactly is that unfair?

The jurisdictions which approve casinos are always concerned about problem gambling and the societal problems that may result, so every casino must agree to fund programs to combat gambling addiction. In addition, every casino is required to bar excluded persons from their premises.
