What percentage of visits are winning trips?

What percentage of casino visits do you think result in a gambling "profit"? And I don't mean "well, I really came out ahead because I got a free room or a free meal or I had a lot of fun gambling". I understand that all of those things are important, and that's why many of us choose this type of entertainment/relaxation. I'm just curious about your estimates of the frequency of a trip resulting in a gambling win. I don't know the answer - I'm sure some casino execs have a pretty good idea. I doubt we'll hear from them because the number is probably depressingly low.

I am not a huge huge Bob Dancer fan, but I do recall him saying something like........... be prepared for 70% of trips to be losers (not exact quote).

So if 70% are losers the other 30% are b/e or wins.

And he was talking about playing perfect strategy on the best paying games with an adequate bankroll.

If you play incorrect strategy on inferior games with a short bankroll the 30% will go down.

Playing slots (non-vp) probly put the number well under 30% as well.

A properly bankrolled and educated table player, who practices some money management can certainly win more than 30% of the time, due to the lower variance involved....... this also means most wins won't be as big % wise (relative to the slot/vp player).

In my experience, winning trips are a very low percentage, but that's OK. It's entertainment for us, some people cruise we gamble. We are OK with it.

It all depends on the length of stay. A day tripper can leave a winner at the end of the day, while those who stay the night could very well lose it all the next day.

"who practices some money management"

I think this is really key.

"winning trips are a very low percentage, but that's OK. It's entertainment for us"

And this.

Many people go to the casino with the mindset of playing until their money is gone. Unless they hit it big, they don't even try to go home with more than they came with. So the fact that the percentage of winning trips is low doesn't really mean much.

That said, for those who are playing to win, the money management part is important. You need to be willing to quit while you're ahead. We've all had times when we were up, sometimes up significantly, but continued to play just because. I'd say the percentage of trips where I'm ahead at some point is quite high. The percentage of times I leave ahead is lower. This is especially true if I get ahead early in my visit. If I sit down and have a quick good run and find myself up a couple hundred but I've only been there for 20 minutes, what am I going to do? I'm not going to pick up and go home. So I keep playing, sometimes holding on to some of the gain, other times not.

The key factor is not the size of your bankroll or how often you go or how long the trip is. The key factor is how much time you actually spend gambling. You go for three days and spend an hour a day gambling, you have a greater chance of winning money or keeping your money then somebody who goes on a one day trip and spends eight hours gambling. The house edge will eventually take over if you continue to gamble. Sometimes you can get real lucky real fast. In which case, you should walk straight out of the casino, go to The Walk, go to the IMAX, go to the Pier Shops. You continue to gamble, you will probably lose what you just won. And that's a fact, Jack.

I don't like to quit after I win. I came to play, that's what I enjoy, and I'm going to keep doing it.

For example, I went down for 3 nights over NYE. Before I even picked up my room keys, I went to a $5 VP machine, hit 4 Deuces on the fourth spin. The way I saw it, I now had more of a bankroll to enjoy. I took half of the jackpot home and the other half will be going with me to Vegas in two weeks.

I had a fabulous time by the way. No regrets!

The OP reminded me of a The Onion article theonion.com/articles/… excerpt: 'Bally's is in the midst of an impressive winning streak, coming out ahead an astonishing 6,753 nights in a row'
