Overnight TR

DW and I stayed overnight at the Chelsea December 30 after using a bidding website.

We arrived around 2 o'clock and were given room 1712 which is an ocean front room. We have had ocean view rooms before but to catch a glimpse of the surf we'd need to look down the street, over the dumpster. This was the first time we've been placed in such a nice location. In years past we would have been placed in the Annex and had to complain to get in the main tower even when bidding on a 4 star. Upon check-in We were given complimentary solarium passes which we didn't use. After 10 minutes in the room we got a knock on the door and it was a worker from Teplitzky's diner delivering a surprise complimentary bottle of champagne on ice and two flutes. It was actually a bottle of pinot noir but close enough! We took it out of the ice and enjoyed playing cards and sipping wine while enjoying the view.

Dinner reservations were at 6:00 at Dock's Oyster House. We shared the calamari appetizer which was delicious and one of the first times I've had calamari that wasn't "chewy". I had clam chowder which was also excellent and my wife had the corn chowder. For dinner I had the crab meat au gratin and she had the special which was snapper. Overall it was a great meal and we felt we got good portions for our money.

After dinner we cabbed it over to Showboat to play some 2-4 poker. We enjoy the showboat because we have played with a lot of the players before and they are generally friendly. Also the dealers are great. I was drinking bottles of Guinness and my wife was downing Miller Lites. We left the showboat down about 20 bucks each after realizing we were the only non-locals at the table. I never feel comfortable playing with a table of players who all know each other and play almost every day. We play about once a month so it was a moral victory not to lose too much. We hopped in a cab again about 1 am to head back to the hotel but decided to stop in at the Irish Pub for a night cap. We ordered steak fries and a couple beers. I was also able to get the jukebox to play 9 songs for 2 bucks, you never know if you'll hear your songs on the jukebox because it doesn't list what the queue is. The cab driver gave us his card and he picked us up at 3.

Check out was noon and we picked up our car from Tropicana (we hate paying the valet fee at Chelsea and waiting for the car). Before heading home we went to Bill's Gyro to help recover. Very hot in there! I had the chicken souvlaki and the wife had the western omelette.

Overall a great trip. With a new baby this was our first overnight in AC since he was born (6 months) so we wanted to sprinkle in a little of everything and I think we accomplished that.

Good luck everyone!

I know everyone has their faves. But if you're open to it, try the St James fries at Irish Pub theirishpub.com/2010/Irish_Pub_Atlantic_City… Oh wait, I made another error. they're called St James Potatoes. Also, I just tried this the 1st time, just before Thanksgiving, and have had it several times since, their Asian Noodle Salad. If you have never had them, now you have something to try on your next AC visit

Thanks for posting the trip report. Was the wine part of your room package? I'm glad you had such a good time, from your room with a view, good meal at Docks as well as a night of gambling. Congrats on the new baby and the chance to get away for the night.

Thanks for the congratulations everyone on the baby.

exotica209: The casinos weren't as busy as a friday or saturday but were definitely more busy than a normal Monday night. 7 tables of 1-2 and 2 tables of 2-4 at the showboat poker room most of the night.

jerrysnj: The wine was a complete surprise, we didn't order a packaged room. It looked like most of the rooms had received it.

rship1: Thanks for the recommendation. We have such favorites at the irish pub that we rarely wander but will have to try the St. James Potatoes next time, they seem right up our alley.

Another thanks for sharing your trip report here. Sounds like a well-deserved trip. Rooms with that ocean view are as good as it gets on the Jersey Shore. Guinness in Showboat are also a treat when you’re in the mood. And more best wishes for the young’un!

How was the chicken souvlaki at Bills? And did you get all your songs in order at the Irish Pub?

Be careful of food recommendations from rship, he might suggest a heart attack on a plate if it was tasty;-) But we all love those delicious eats!
