A Week (on and off) at the casinos

Hi Everyone - we're just back home from a week in Cape May and several assorted forays to the casinos. For the first time, I actually saw someone win the Triple Play quarter progressive jackpot - a massive $63,000 - on Thursday night at Showboat. She was sitting two seats away from Hubby and me, who were both playing and holding our own. I became aware that a machine nearby was ringing quietly. The lady next to me said "she got it" and I thought she meant that the lady had scored 3 5 of a kinds - which is $3,000 and a handpay. No, she said, she got the progressive! Well, how weird is this situation......the machine is quietly ringing and NO ONE COMES FOR 10 MINUTES!! And when they DO come, they say "Oh, we didn't know you won the progressive" and start scurrying around. Meanwhile, the winner is absolutely stone faced. I mean, this woman had NO REACTION at all. My husband (who is familiar with psychaitric patients) thought she was on lithium. She wasn't drunk, just sat there staring into space and as people came by to congratulate her she just had no reaction.

Anyway, I know from someone else who won this that the casino has to get the CCC/DGE involved and also a representative of the machine's manufacturer (apparently they are on call) has to attend and they remove the mother board and verify that it hasn't been tampered with etc, so this process takes about an hour.

Needless to say we cashed out after this went off and played elsewhere. When we walked by about an hour later they were just finishing up. The woman was just standing there totally zoned out. No, I don't think she was in shock. I have no idea what I would do if I ever won that kind of money but I guess it was kind of sad to see this person being so not excited or happy.

We stayed overnight at Showboat on Weds and Thurs because hubby had to work in Philly unexpectedly. The casino was crowded on Weds night but empty on Thurs night. We had dinner at Rib & Chop on Weds night and it was good as usual. Walked over to Bally's for the Virginia City Buffet on Thurs night. Bally's was much busier than the Showboat. We tried our luck but basically had a two day dry spell no matter where we went or what we played.

I took the opportunity to really look over the Bally's facility since hubby and I are getting tired of the limited dining choices at the Boat. Also tried the new Diamond Club which I'm told had just been opened the day before. It is a stunning large room with a full bar oceanfront, absolutely gorgeous and makes the Boat's Diamond club seem kinda crummy.

Since I am not familiar with Bally's I am wondering if this room used to be something called the Roaring 20's supper club? Does anyone know? And have any of you eaten at Prime Place, Arturo's or Mr. Ming's? We're thinking of taking a room at Bally's in August just to give it a try. From reading all of your posts I gather that the Tower is the place to stay at Bally's.

On Saturday night since we had a friend visiting who wanted to go to AC, I reluctantly agreed to take her. Reluctantly only because I hate going there on Saturday nights. She wanted to go to the Trop - where I used to play exclusively until 3 years ago and I hadn't been back since they opened the Quarter. Well, the noise level was deafening, hoards of seriously drunk kids swarming all over, a really bad band playing and the usual grotesquely dirty slot areas.. ah yes, now I remember why I left the Trop. Just the same only bigger, louder and dirtier. Ugh. A shame too, because they have a wonderful selection of video poker games which the Boat doesn't have. Since I had to kill a couple of hours so my friend could play slots, I sat down at a nickle joker poker mini progressive, 5 play. As soon as I sat down, a burly man rudely informed me that the machine was "taken"...so I moved to the one next to it and put in a $10 bill. On my first bet of $1.25 I got 5 sevens and won $200. Mr. Burly Man saw my smirk as I cashed out and left. Hope he enjoyed his "taken " machine...nyah nyah.

Parlayed that into $450 as I got 4 deuces on a quarter Deuces Wild. All told, made $450 on $10 bet....not a bad haul. After that I decided just to watch the drunk kids while waiting for my friend. One guy was literally taking his clothing off. No security in sight. Another kid was vomitinginto a potted palm. What a place. Not for anyone over 30.

Anyway, thos of you who can guide me about the fine points of Bally's dining choices, pool, spa, etc. please do.

Hope you all have a great week coming up!

Great job on turning that $10 into $450!!

I have eaten at the Prime Place and it was really good. I think it was also really expensive, but I didn't have to pay or see the full bill - just caught a glimpse of the top of it and thoght that was a lot of money for an appetizer.....

Your details of the drunken antics at the Trop almost make me want to go back there, tho I swore off the Trop years ago. ;-)

For rooms at Ballys, try to stay in the upper tower, then ask for just anything in the tower. If that is not avi ask for either the Dennis hotel rooms or the garden rooms. (I've never stayed in the Garden rooms, but they are in the Dennis hotel and are supposedly the largest rooms they have besides the suites. I have also heard they are a little more dated than the Ballys Tower.)

For casual dining late at night, go to Animations (instead of the Garden Cafe in the Claridge).

Pickles has good reubens if you are in need of some greasy substinance, but they aren't open 24 hours. I usually hit them for lunch. I went to Johnney Rocket's once and had an enjoyable burger, but I like Pickles better. They are both on the main Ballys casino floor, neaer the exit to the Boardwalk.

Gee if i won 63,000,i would still be yellin! if i win $100 i carry on.Nice win for you too AC.I hate it when they say this machine is "taken".Also the Garden Cafe is great for dining. If you like Italian they have a great Shrimp Scampi and Penne with Marinara Sauce.Loaded with Jumbo Shrimp.TheTerminator on here can help you out with Ballys, its his home base when in A/C.

Ha Ha to Mr. Burly Man, don't you love it when that happens.

I have eaten at The Prime Place and the Service & Food were fantastic. Three of of us all had seafood dishes & 1 person had the salad buffet & we all had appetizers desert & coffee. The bill came to around $ 200.00. It was all comped but i still would pay for a meal like that and certainly eat there again besides, the way i look at it is i would spend $50.00 or more in a slot machine lasting maybe 10 minutes so why not treat yourself to a nice sit down meal.

As Moneywho suggested we started going to The Garden Cafe after he had mentioned it last year. It has very good food and a nice relaxing view if you get by the windows. The prices are also very fair there.

The Spa is fantastic with a large indoor pool , sauna inhalation room & many hot tub / whirpools * lounge chairs. You can access the outdoor sundeck which is enormous and it overlooks the boardwalk & beach from the back of the spa. They also have a tiki bar on the sundeck which serves frozen drinks etc..

The tower rooms are very nice. If you click the link below you can see the pictures i took of the tower room, the spa area & the outdoor sundeck.

The reason i stick with Ballys is for the spa & the rooms definately not their casino. In the summer i hang out on the sundeck or in their pool or beach bar all day and do my gaming at night.

CHEERS !!!!!!!!!

Hey Everyone - thanks so much for your advice about Bally's. I knew I could count on you all. I'll let you know how we do in August. Term, a special thanks for the photos...there is nothing like seeing the room.

It's funny, I too am thinking of switching from Showboat next trip. I got my august room offers, including Trop, Ballys, Resorts, etc. When I stayed in the Bourbon Tower at Showboat, my friends were impressed with the flat (LCD?) tv; one isn't a gambler, so she crashed early watching tv while other friend and I stayed out all night. Truth be told, I like TV as well, and if I'm losing will often kill an hour or two in my room. Do any of the other casinos have the nice tvs? I was thinking of trying the Trop next time, but am open to all. Any guidance?

Cate- I've only stayed in the West tower and North tower at the Trop- TV's were just TV's...The Havana tower may have something nicer, but you won't get a comped room there (unless you're a high roller, maybe)!!

ACMama... That is so great that you got to thumb your nose at the "burly man". Serves him right! .... Ended up serving you pretty well, I might add. <grin>

Boy, ACMama.... if only it were that easy to convert $10 into $450 *all* the time! lol I'm so glad for you!

The vision of college-age kids throwing up in the planters doesn't surprise me. Nor the lack of security, either. That is the type of atmosphere that the Trop is shooting for (and hitting).

Still can't believe how much I used to like playing at the Trop versus now. <shakes head>

Anyway, glad you and your dark cl--, er, *significant other*, were able to enjoy AC and Cape May for the week. <wink>

Good report, ACMama!
