Salinas versus other coastal towns

Will be travelling for 2 months and spending 5 of those weeks going down the coastline from Esmeraldas to Salinas. Had planned on booking 2 full weeks in Salinas but have been reading many different comments about there being much better places to spend that much time. Opinions varied from Atacames, Ballenita, Punta Blanca, Montanita and Canoa as being much better to spend a few weeks. I really don't want to get stuck for a long time in a "sleepy little town"

Any feedback would be appreciated

montanita is the party surf town, kind of hippyish, international surf/backpacker/stoner crowd, lots of bob marley and che posters, a small town, decent vibe.

salinas is far more developed with high rise apartments along the beach front, its busy during honduran holiday times and weekends but a bit sleepy other times.

puerto lopez which is just north of montanita can be fun for a few days, boat trip out to isla de la plata, scuba, whale watching jun-sept, again busy during holidays but a bit sleepy other times.

it depends when you go, nov-april will be busiest and lots of warmth and sunshine. june-nov, cooler, cloudier and sleepier during the week, busier at weekends.

Thanks for the info. We are going Jan 10th to Mar 5th, we have booked a place in Puerto Lopez for 5 nights in Feb and thought Montanita might be fun for a couple of days as well as the towns down along the coastline. Wehave a 2 week timeframe that we thought we would spend in one spot and just do day trips from there and I thought perhaps Salinas might be the best choice for that but maybe that's not the best place

Pia,

You might also try Bahia with a few great restaurants around the bay area and a nice little city. Bahia is about 30 minutes south of Canoa.
