Health Care

I am interested in moving to Salinas for part of the year but would require excellent health care. What is health care like in Salinas? Is Pain Management readily available or will I have to travel back to the states?

A better source for information would be the ex-pats' forum on Yahoo. Quito has good medical care.

Nana,

Salinas has one public hospital where they will not really care for you.

Guayaqui, located two hours east of it has great private hospitals but pricey.

If you have US inssurance that cover you while you live in Ecuador, then you will be fine with our private hospital care in Guayaquil. Otherwise you will have to fly back and forth from the States.

Dennis, "pricey" can be a relative term. Our son has been in Cuenca for approximately six months, and he's dating a local doctor. His impression is that health care there is dirt cheap when compared to prices in the USA and that he's much better off paying for most procedures out-of-pocket, rather than paying insurance premiums. The hospital he's been using is Santa Ines.

I've looked at some of their prices for procedures online and I have to agree with him. Many of the procedures are priced at 1/4 of what they would cost in the USA.

Sorry, I made a mistake on the hospital name. He uses Del Rio.
