Considering the average Egyptian is only paid about £1.50 a day, leaving a £1 tip is a hefty addition to his pay. If you were in the sthe best part of a day’s pay, you would think they were mad. An occasional US$1 tip is much appreciated as they can change it at the bank whereas £1 coins cannot be changed at the bank. If you want to tip, please do so, but LE5 is probably a better level of tip and will be just as appreciated. Hope this helps.

Sorry there was a typo in the previous.

Considering the average Egyptian is only paid about £1.50 (LE15) a day, leaving a £1 or US$1 tip is a hefty addition to his pay. If you were in the service industry and you were being tipped the best part of a day’s pay for some routine service, you would think the tippers were mad. An occasional US$1 tip is much appreciated as they can change it at the bank whereas £1 coins cannot be changed at the bank. If you want to tip, please do so, but LE5 is probably a better level of tip and will be just as appreciated.

Hope this helps.

Have a look at this link called "Suggested Individual Tipping In Egypt", authored by LoiseAL from Denmark, destinationexpert for Cairo.

It's certainly the most detailed list I've seen, covering almost anybody/anything one can come to think of.

Just got back from Egypt and we were new to the whole tipping thing too.

We tipped our maid 20LE the first day and 20LE when we left. We tipped the bell boy about 20LE both on arrival and departure. We never tipped barmen because to be honest we werent at the bars for a lengthy time. We left a 20% tip when we ate out at restaurants. Also you have to tip in toilets when out of your hotel and 1LE is acceptable so make sure you keep any coins spare. Also if you go on excursions its nice to tip your guide at the end of the day. usually about 20-30LE. Bare in mind though a tip is not manditory it is for a good service so if you think your guide was poor then dont tip him at all. Dont feel that you have to. Same goes with restaurant service and house keeping.

to me a tip is personal, if you get good service you tip, bad service you dont, we tipped when it was deserved not cos they held their hand out.

we did tip the guy that took us to the room and showed us where things were, ok £1 but it was worth it to save us lugging the cases(ok he pushed them on a trilley),plus he showed us where water bottles where, the toilets, pools etc. the pool guy first morning also got a £1 to show us best place to sunbathe, with beds and brollys, we did it ourselves from then on, our barman got £10 at end of 2 weeks cos he looked after us like he would his mum,he brought us coffee or juice to our sun beds every morning when he started and carried drinks to our beds during the day, the others prefered to chat amongst them selves. the room boy also got tips as our room was spotless. the rest sorry to say didnt get anything as they didnt really do anything other than their job. sorry if this sounds brutal
