Where to stay in sharm?? Location, Location, Location.

My husband and I, both 30, are looking for a holiday in Sharm. Having never been before we are uncertain which area to look at. We are looking at beachfront hotels, Savoy and Hilton Waterfalls have caught our eye. My concern is that although these hotels are very self-contained and have everything we might need in terms of restaurants and bars, there might not be enough places to dine/wine outside the hotel. Especially given 5* hotels charge extortionate amounts for their food and drink we want the option to go to other (cheaper) restaurants elsewhere. I don't want to be ripped off paying 5* prices all week (we won't be going all inclusive). We don't want to go anywhere too loud and we are not interested in nightclubs, just pleasant restaurants, cafes and bars (preferably with a good view!!). Any suggestions? I've heard Naama Bay is loud and harassing, whereas I get the impression Shark's Bay is more of a shopping district. Even with Soho Square, I think we may want somewhere a little bit more laid back. Please help. Also is it true that you can't enter the sea except via the jetties because of the coral? I read a review that even the Savoy, with its long sandy beach, had this problem. Does anyone know of any hotel beaches which you can wade into?... very important to us. Thanks in advance.

Hi there

The Hilton Waterfalls is a super hotel, with lots of cafes/restaurants nearby - walkable, beautiful views and this is a cheaper area for eating. Very near to Alf Leila Wa Leila (Fantasia) and Il Mercato Shopping Mall, with it's fast food outlets and restaurants, pics under my profile. El Fanar Italian Restaurant close by with wonderful views of sunsets www.elfanarsharm.com

I have stayed at the Waterfalls 10 times

If you want to walk into the water from the beach then check The Iberotel Palace in Old Sharm, I've also stayed here many times (pics under my profile) another super hotel on the doorstep of the Old Market and it's cheaper shops/cafeas/restaurants. There is no coral on the main beach, great for swimming, but they do have a coutesy boat to their other beach for snorkelling - best of both worlds!

If you like more info on either, let me know

Regards

Hi

We stayed at the Hilton Fayrouz in Naama Bay, great hotel, great beach, we booked it after reading the reviews on TA and were not disappointed, it is only 5 minutes walk from the restaurants and bars, yes you do get approached by people inviting you into their restaurants and shops, but this is the Egyptian culture and you will just have to accepted if you are in their country, we weren't put off at all and can't wait to go back.

Hi Barbarah, thanks for your suggestions. I checked out Ibertel Palace - looks great but quite a bit over budget and I'm disappointed Hilton Waterfalls doesn't have a 'swimming beach' otherwise I think it would have been perfect. Splashing around in the sea, even waist high, is quite high on our list of priorities and I don't fancy jumping off the end of a jettie. Still looking but thanks for your help.

Naama bay is really not that bad for hassle and it gets my vote for the beach, the hotels already mentioned and the fishlife is OK for a sandy beach with little coral aswell.

We've stayed in the Novotel in Naama Bay..... half way around the bay.... there are lots of restaurants along side the promenade leading to Naama Bay 'centre' all very pretty at night..... The beach is lovely with a great house reef starting only waist deep - the fish are very colourful and quite amazing!!! Naama Bay can be loud and noisy - but there are many places just outside to enjoy a quite time 'people' watching!

What a bout the strip of hotels that are on Nabq beach and face the shopping and eating strip there - the La Strada? Look for La Strada under "Shopping areas" at www.sharmweb.net - a very nice interactive map - you tick the name, and the map moves to the correct location.

Then also tick "Hotels" and you will see which hotels are immediately across the road or otherwise near-by.I briefly checked, I can see Coral Sea, Holiday Village Coral Sea, Oriental, Laguna Vista.

Magic Life Imperial also not so far, I think this one quite compares to what Savoy was a few years ago when it was still fresh, and is Brit favorite, too, or what. :D

There you can wade in, some, though it is not deep, but also the beach is a wide sandy beach and with a long beach promenade/walkway for beautiful pre-sunset walks.

BTW in Savoy you can wade in, as I remember, around the area where the water activity boats (banana driving boat etc) leave from. The bottom is deeper there and sandier. And yes - the whole bunch of hotels by the Naama Bay beach, though most of them are pretty outdated while expensive. Or simply expensive like the Sofitel or Novotel or Maritim.

What about Hilton Fayrouz if Hilton is on the list anyway? Not so new but very classic, and they use a very generous huge strip in the middle of the beach/bay. Their own territory also huge with nice well-grown gardens all around. Beach promenade in Naama is extra nice, and totally hassle-free, except for the first 100 metres where the fish restaurants are. All food is so near, too :-).

Oh, or you can stay at Hilton Waterfalls, take in the good service and views there, but take taxi in the morning to the Old Sharm beaches - just 5 min and max 15 egp from Hilton Waterfalls. The whole Old Sharm Bay has public beaches like the old and renown Terrazzina and El Kheima in the middle from where the glass bottom boats leave, or there is one immediately when you descend from the Hadaba cliff, by the Beach Albatross territory there, or there are several at the father end where the water is perhaps a bit more clear and clean.

They charge somewhere around 30 egp, should include a towel and of course sunbed, the fancier ones may charge 50 egp.

Do sample the various beaches in Sharm, even go to Nabq if you do not choose to stay there, where you have a public beach by Raouf hotel, I think it is called Zouara (not to be confused with a hotel with same name) or also Laguna Vista has a cool beach with a beach club but they do charge around 100-120 egp from "outsiders" then :-).

A helpful review by local Brit residents here, and look at photos!

You are bound to your hotel by its bed and shower quality only, and perhaps breakfast quality (unless you have it delivered, too - Makani's does a great one). All else in Sharm you can choose to "do" where you want to :-).

Sharks Bay, yes you can wade in, but you have to drive out there by taxi. Nearest from Savoy, from your choices, but Savoy IS NOT in Sharks Bay, it is a totally faulty locationing by the British travel agents. There are at least 1-2 other bays between the Sharks Bay and the White Knight Bay where Savoy is and where Soho square is and you have to make a 3-4 km to circle by taxi along the various roads to get from one to another.

Hi,

How about the Iberotel Lido?

Two recent reviews under my profile. You can go B+B, HB, FB, AI.

You can enter the water form the beach, walk 2 mins into Na'ama by the beach or 5 mins by road.

Photos here (wonderful, wonderful views):

We also like the Maritim Resort & Casino (doesn't do AI) in Na'ama Bay & have stayed there 7 times. Still has nice views but think the Lido tops it for that.

Hilton Fayrouz in Na'ama also gets good reports on here.
