Egypt (Sharm el Sheikh) or Turkey??

I'm planning on going on holiday for two weeks in September and can't decide on Turkey or Egypt.

My partner and I are not into diving or watersports, and I was wondering if there are other things to do in Sharm el Sheikh? We do like to shop (used to haggling as been to Tunisia a few times) and we like to explore places of interest. Somebody did tell me that it is quite 'european' in Sharm and I was hoping for a more authentic experience.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Might be worth having a look at Hurghada where from you can easily visit Luxor by road. You can visit Cairo on a flight from either.

Otherwise i would maybe think about Turkey as i think that the towns and ciites such as Antalya, Bodrum and Marmaris offer a little more than Sharm or Hurghada with regard to exploring and shopping. No doubt some will disagree with me!

For snorkelling and diving and days of cloud free skies, friendly people and good hotels i would say Egypt but if you do want more to do then i would be inclined to go for Turkey, only from my own experience. The only issue would be the weather at the back end of Sept in Turkey could be a bit iffy.

You can have several trips which do not include diving / snorkeling:

Desert safari; day trips to Petra, Jerusalem, Cairo or Luxor.

If you do not like this kind of trips then choose Antalya or Bodrum. They have by far better services and food than Egypt. Turkey is more expensive but better services.

Sharm is definitely the place to go if you want to snorkel or dive and the Red Sea is the main reason many people come to Egypt. I have been diving in Turkey but Egypt is much much better. If you are not interested in this, there is still so much to see in Egypt such as Cairo, the pyramids and the museum and Luxor and all its amazing treasures and tombs.

There is plenty of shopping in Sharm; the usual tourist designer fake stuff( some good and some bad), though having been to Turkey many times, as well as Sharm, I would say the quality is better in Turkey, also the hassle whilst shopping can be unbelievable and you need to be a good haggler to get any bargains. Also the hassle in Sharm can be unbelievable at times.

The other reason for visiting Egypt is the wonderful antiquities here so if these or the Red Sea are not the main reason for visiting Egypt, I would suggest Turkey would be more suitable for you.

Icmeler in Turkey is a great place for a holiday or Side which combines shopping, great beaches and antiquities.

Good luck choosing your holiday !

Side, Turkey. Go for a pansiyon or modest hotel within the village - not one of the big lookalikes some kilometers out - and you will be surrounded by ancient ruins, all very picturesque. There is a small antiquities museum, a pretty harbour and two beaches - the Western is the most commercialised, the Eastern is quieter. There is a selection of day trips and short tours available - cheaper from a local firm than from a rep. - 2 nights to Cappadocia; 1 night to Pammukale; Perge and Aspendos; Antalya; Manavgat market; river cruise from Manavgat; sea trips along the coast: something for everyone.

For me, the reason to visit Sharm is for the underwater life. It's the nearest warm water coral to Britain. Of course, the constant sunshine and the incredibly good value hotels add to the package.

You don't go to Sharm for the culture. Until the 1960's the Sinai coast had just a few tiny villages and Bedouin encampments. Everything (well, over 99% anyway) has been constructed within living memory, often by large, multi-national corporations or Egyptian businesses based in the capital.

Few of the people you'll meet are resident in the Sinai. Nearly all are working away from their families in Cairo and Alexandria. I don't mind going AI in Sharm, whereas I'd never consider it in Turkey. You can't go out and support the local economy. There isn't one.

If you want culture and history, Turkey is hard to beat. It has more Roman ruins than Italy, more Hellenic remains than Greece, and history and culture in the more recent past that is stunning in its complexity and magnificence. I think I've visited a dozen times or more since 1987.

I like both places, but for very different reasons.

Hi,

Have been to both countries, including other parts of Egypt. The authentic taste of Egypt is not really to be found in Sharm as it's a man-made tourist resort.

Maybe if you check out the photos of various areas in Sharm & read thru the Tips thread at the top of the forum, or at least the Top Q, over on the right, you may get a bit of a clearer picture as to whether Sharm is for you. The Top Q & tips thread both explain trips available from Sharm, over to Cairo & Luxor.

I do Sharm in the winter and Dalyan in the summer. If I had to give up one holiday it would def be Egypt. I love Turkey and if you go to the smaller resorts then the locals accept you into their lives. They are friendlier and the food is def better. There is a wealth of culture and activities to do there
