Just when you make a decision - cold feet!

Someone has just said to me they would never take there children to Sharm as it is not safe in the Sinai area at the moment

Any thoughts from anyone recently returned?? I know that there have been threads about the safety of Sharm but looking for recent opinions and feedback.

I've been back for about a month and a half and was travelling between egypt and jordan during the egyptian elections. Generally i would say Sharm is a bubble in which you are almost entirely detached from egyptian culture and the outside world in egypt, and i never felt unsafe whilst in Sharm. Also, the trouble in Sinai is in North Sinai, at the complete opposite end of the country, at the israeli border. Personally, if i were to go back in the near future i doubt i'd travel outside of the South Sinai area (anywhere another visa would be neccessary) mainly because, as we were travelling back from nuweiba port to sharm we had to stop at a checkpoint for an hour to wait for a police escort to follow us back to sharm, as two 19 year olds, we felt very anxious. After research since returning home, there have been quite a few kidnappings and robberies of tourists on the roads. I would definitely have a good read through the FCO travel advice first. Hope that helped

I understand making a decision to holiday in Sharm at the moment must be difficult with all the negative press about Sinai. Fortunately the troubles are concentrated well to the North on the border with Israel and when you look at a map of Sinai you can appreciate quite how far away that is. I live in Sharm and can assure you that there are currently no safety issues here to worry about. None of us can predict the future of course so keeping an eye on the FCO travel advice, like the previous poster suggests, is always a good idea.

Been back about 3 weeks, and would go back tomorrow! We were there through the Revolution, never had a worry down in Sharm. Likewise this year, North Sinai is a LONG way from Sharm - have a look at a map to see just how far. i live in London, and it's like me worrying about events in Scotland!!

The only person who can make the decision is you. Thousands of people travel daily to places others would consider unsafe and the vast majority have an amazing time. It's natural to watch or read thè news and have concerns but you have to put these in perspective.

You will miss out if you don't go. The Egyptians love children and it's a great holiday destination. I took my son (he was 6 then) to Taba and Dahab just a few months after the bombings in 2006. It was FINE. The media LOVE to hype it all up. You could get bombed in Glasgow, eh??

I was also in Egypt in Jan 2011 (start of the riots) and it was perfectly safe as well.

The media have also badmouthed Greece and yet, I have been 3 times this year and used my cashpoint card, paid by card and had no trouble at all.

Please go and enjoy.
