Tourism Slump - True or False ?????

With the recent difficulties in Egypt, along with the sad balloon accident, the british couple kidnapped and the general uprising and protests ............ I keep hearing that tourism has taken a huge down turn.

What are peoples personal opinion ............ is Egypt on the slightly 'empty' side, do hotels seem under occupied, did it put you off of travelling about etc ????? Just curious !

I do not know about Sharm itself, but if you look at the Luxor Forum almost every trip report mentions the lack of tourists

And in the UK TC are about to get rid of nearly 200 shops and 2,500 staff

That says more about TC itself certainly, but is indicative of the whole UK tourist industry - we can't afford a holiday - Egypt or elsewhere!

The government says tourism is down about 40% from 2010. Most people feel like the real number is much, much worse.

tourism in all parts of Egypt sadly is at its lowest slowest and most unstable in decades.

for the most all of this was caused by internal events within the country

in the past 2 years.

had that not happened even with the economic downturn Egypt tourism would still have been pretty buoyant imho as it appeals to so many and has 365 sunshine usually.

all very sad, it is not just ''quiet'' many parts are simply emptied out and off the tourist track now.

you can still go but it is all a shadow of its former iconic status as one of the worlds wonders for holidays and adventures.

its gonna be a long haul to get back there

I have made several trips to Egypt including Sharm, Marsa Alam and most recently Dahab.

There is no doubt that tourism numbers are lower than they were but the plus side of that is that hotels, restaurants and other providers are trying to impress. The exchange rate to Egyptian pounds reflects the current position and should mean you get a good deal on purchases you make.

I felt very much at ease in Dahab and was not at all concerned about my safety. I found the people friendly, of course they tried to get you to come into their shops/restaurants, but they were not pushy. The local kids selling bits and pieces also took no for an answer.

If you have been to Egypt before and have concerns then I'd try to put them aside and go again, if you are a first timer pick a good hotel and give it a go.

Many Egyptian families depend on the earnings from tourism so going there will help the current situation.

A friend has just returned from Naama Bay - she says her hotel was 30% full. We're going there in 5 weeks, this will be our 9th trip..... we were there the week after the shark attack, and obviously there are concerns for safety, but to be honest..... I feel safer in Naama Bay than my own town at home !!!!

Numbers may be down but it has not been reflected in flight prices thats for sure.

Hotels are doing their bit to draw us back but just had a look at October flights and there are no cheap flights, sonthey must be cutting down on flights???

Some other friends wanted to join us so I tried to book them in

The hotel is completely full!!!!

Its too early for Easter, I wonder if the Russians are on holiday?

Has anybody any idea why the hotel would be full?
