Closure of St. Catherine's Monastery & some hotels

Hi,

The first link is courtesy of Cairo DE Modesto111:

al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2013/09/st-ca…

The 2nd was brought to my attention earlier in the week (I don't know which hotels are involved)

dailynewsegypt.com/2013/…

The 3rd link is by Sandy; have asked that he/she re-posts on the Sharm forum so that it's not missed by those who need to know:

Regards

Thanks - if that's the right word - for posting this Nephthys. Like SemperLiber, my heart bleeds. We have friends in Sharm - workers in hotels and restaurants whom we have got to know over the years and who instantly recognise us when we return, sometimes up to a year later (how they remember us out of the thousands they must see every year is a mystery to me). Most of them work in Sharm but their families live in Cairo or Alexandria (you know how it is) and even now I think of them constantly and hope they are ok.

Here's hoping the situation improves in Egypt soon. Very soon. They're good people.

This is all so sad for the people of Egypt.

There seems to be rumours that some countries will resume flights next week, but it is hard to see how things can get back to normal anytime soon.

This is such a shame. I hope flights from other countries resume soon.

The Guardian is running the St. Catherine's story now (thanks to poster Semper Liber for the link):

theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/05/mount-sina…

Near the end, it says they wanted to consider re-opening later this month but the bomb in Cairo (this week) means they won't be.

In addition to the closed hotels, others are laying some of the staff off. For some it's already happened; others will be laid off at the end of September.

Regards

For what it's worth, Jaz Mirabel Club is the latest hotel to close with guests being moved the the neighbouring Jaz Mirabel Park hotel.
