Sharm or Hurghada?

My friend and I are planning a trip to Egypt November 2014 - we are two forty something females, we want to go all inclusive. There's so much to choose from that we can't decide, we like the sun and a few drinks at night although we probably won't venture very far from the hotel. Can someone please explain the differences between the two resorts, also on reading the reviews even on the top hotels it appears that a lot of people get tummy trouble, I know this can happen anywhere cos I've had it myself in Spain. What exactly causes it, does anyone know? and what precautions can we take to avoid it apart from the obvious like washing hands regulary and using bottled water to brush teeth. Also where are the nicest beaches.

Many thanks for any advice

If you want nice beaches look at makadi bay just outside Hurghada, lovely beach and nice hotels. We stayed at Fort Arabesque which was lovely. You can walk into the sea here to snorkel whereas in Sharm you go in from a jetty usually.

Have stayed in Sharm and Hurghada and both are lovely, but we now stay in Dahab which is our favourite as it is laid back wth smaller hotels and has a bit of a hippy vibe about it.

If you want nightlife then Sharm is the place for you, if you want a really nice beach and the ability to have a walk around the beach through other hotels then look at makadi bay and if you want really laid back but great snorkelling and fab restaurants look at Dahab.

I am sure others will have different opinions, but this is how we felt, hope it helps!

Hi loobspreston

We are also having the same dilemma, easyjet fly to Hurghada from London and are offering the dates that we want, good flying times too, the hotels in Hurghada/Makadi bay look really nice but Sharm also appeals to us as we can have a wander at night...We have two young children with us too and have read good reviews on the Jungle aqua park in Hurghada but myself and my husband would also like a bit of luxury too...Aw decisions decisions!haha

Hi Sarah

Me and my wife have stayed in jungle aqua park twice and it's amaZing it's the best hotel I've ever been to for children they will love it and we haven't got any children I was like a big kid all the time south to do but amazing for adults too the sun beds by the pool come in doubles or singles with actual matteresses on them (waterproof of course) also there are a range of four poster beds besides the pools also if there is one hotel that I would go back to again and again it's this one the food also is amazing you won't regret picking this hotel

It has always seemed to me (and also from my own experience) that people seem to get ill more often in Sharm than the Hurghada resorts. No one can tell you exactly what it is but i have always thought it is an airborne virus. If you think that people who get it, don't tend to hide away even though they are feeling a bit under the weather and so are in the pool, restaurant etc. This is where it just keeps getting passed around and around and around...

Take some hand sanitiser and use it before you eat any food with your hands like rolls and fruit. There is no need to wash your teeth with bottled water, tap water is perfectly safe for this and ice cubes and salad are also fine as bottled water is used.

There are a million things you could try to stop getting it but trying everything anyone has mentioned has not stopped me getting it in the past. I don't let it bother me though, just get to a chemist and get some Antinal and all is well in a couple of days!

And i prefer Hurghada to Sharm. El Gouna is a gem and well worth a look at.

Hi Sarahmichelle,

We have been to Sharm several times (returning in 2 weeks) and Makadi Bay twice. Personally, I prefer Makadi Bay but husband prefers Sharm as he finds Makadi Bay too quiet due to it's location.

However, as you have 2 young children, and it has been about 5 years since our last trip there, i would reccommend the Sunrise Royal Makadi Bay. Although I don't have any young children myself now, they seem to be well catered for ... childrens club, water slides etc, and the beach is gently shelving, so very safe for children. Also, since our last trip I believe they now have 7/8 a la carte restaurants to choose from, and from past experience we always found the food to be very good although the main buffet restaurant (with seperate section for children) we found to be a bit of a free for all, but we only tended to have breakfast there.

Regards,

Pat

Hi Loobs

I have stayed in both Hurghada & Sharm. I found both had their plus points.

Hurghada is very much a working city & therefore you do see part of the real Egypt. It's a place where I found tourists were very much welcomed & appreciated. On the negative side our hotel was 40 mins away from Hurghada itself..many are in this area, it was Jungle Aqua Park & was a fab hotel. It had a water park but was very much suited to both families, friends or couples.

Sharm is man made & as such I felt tourism was the main focus. I felt I needed to be a bit more savvy in Sharm, but if your new to Egypt read all the tips on haggling & the scams etc. It hasn't put me off in any way & we're returning (my friend & I) at the end of Nov. I don't mean that in a negative way. It depends what your going for, if its just r & r like us Sharm is perfect. Prices are great at the moment too.

Hi,

Over on the right of the page are the Top Q; one asks, "Sharm or Hurghada?" & shows previous discussions, the another is about upset stomachs & the theories about causes / prevention:

Sharm or Hurghada:

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g297549-i9198-k3… (you'd def need a visa for Hurghada, purchase on arrival. You don't always need a visa for Sharm; again, please see the Top Q)

Upset stomachs:

Many thanks to all that have posted - we have narrowed it down to a few both in Sharm and Hurgarda - we are waiting for the prices to come out for next November and just going to compare what's the best deal - they both seem nice places.
