Excursions stopped?/safe to fly solo to Cairo?

Hello ,I've Been to sharm a few times, and an organised trip to Cairo on one occasion.

Me and the gf are adventurous travellers and wish to visit Cairo , Petra ,Dead Sea etc. If the organised trips are still disallowed(?) can we get an air Egypt flight, visit the pyramids ,have a mooch, stay a night then fly back ? I'm aware Cairo has a very low crime rate compared to euro cities, but will the recent trouble affect safety too much ?

You should have no problem to do as you have planned. I think spending the night is a great idea. That way you could get almost 2 full days in Cairo. Lots to see and do.

Cairo is a great city to explore. Make sure you check out some of the sites in Islamic Cairo. The Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids are a must as well.

Go for it you will be glad you made the effort.

Hey Badflaw,

I travelled directly to Cairo in mid March returning, early April, I travelled solo most of the time.

When travelling to tourist sites I had a guide with me the whole time which made it a lot easier to avoid vendors. I loved it. At no time I felt unsafe in Cairo, it was a great country to experience, Pyramids are amazing and you must go to the Cairo museum. I also didn't have any plans effected due to safety issues in the area.

I also flew Egypt Air to Abu Simbel and another flight from Luxor to Cairo.. the airline was fine, not the best service, but its cheap so you cant really complain about it.

My advice would be to arrange tours with a guide. But then again if you are an experienced traveller you might be comfortable just doing your own thing.

I hope this helps.

Hello badflaw, As a local tour operator in Sharm we run Cairo trip 4 times weekly and all clients feeling very safe in Cairo.

Tourstic sites are very secured. there is no need of fear there.

Petra trip also very safe and very nice trip.

We don't recommend Jerusalem trip & dead sea as its so long trip by bus. the trip take over 32 hours.

Just keep checking the FCO website! If it says do not travel to Cairo, then dont, because its very unlikely you would still be insured if you travel to a place when it is being advised not to visit it. Im sure it will be fine, but do follow the advice from the FCO :)

is the link to the UK FO site. You can sign up for email alerts.

Petra & Jerusalem are overland trips so, despite local firms saying they do them & advertising themselves on here, against TA rules, you would struggle to get insurance to cover you as it's thru the 'no go' area, according to the FO map. No doubt the people who losts their lives at the Taba border, in Feb, thought they were safe; Petra & Israel trips both go up that way.

Flights to Cairo (green zone) are ok. Don't be fooled into thinking you'll be covered by a local firm's insurance; not all are licensed/legal & I wouldn't want to try & enforce a foreign country's insurance (if it actually exists); it's bad enough battling with UK insurance companies, at times!
