Egypt to start chaning it's clocks again!

Egypt's government to re-apply daylight saving time

Starting 15 May, Egypt will switch to summer time by adjusting the clock one hour forward, except during Ramadan.

The Egyptian cabinet's spokesperson Hossam El-Qweish said on Wednesday that Egypt is to re-apply daylight saving time starting this month, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.

Starting 15 May, Egypt will switch to summer time by adjusting the clock one hour forward. The change will be lifted during Ramadan, however.

In April 2011, the cabinet headed by then-prime minister Essam Sharaf endorsed a decree cancelling daylight saving time.

Daylight saving time was first adopted in Egypt in 1988 as a way to reduce electricity consumption. The electricity and energy ministry later submitted a study to the cabinet revealing that implementing daylight saving time had no impact in this regard.

In Egypt, the standard time is GMT (UTC) + 2 and so GMT + 3 during daylight savings time.

If you have flights to or from Egypt on or after 15th May you need to double check with your airline the times given are not going to be different. I had a situation some years back when I was due to fly on a 'clock change' day and the supervisor tried to convince me that Cairo and Luxor were on different times anyway! Hmmm!!!

Edit: ooops...chaning = changing!

Hmm does that mean July will still only be 2 hours ahead because of Ramadan?

We were there the year when they didn't change the clock but had no problems, just check the flight time home, there was an hour difference on our ticket, but we had a rep so was well informed. In Hurghada this July, Ramadan so we shall see..........

It is at the moment. The UK is currently British Summer Time which is GMT+1, Egypt is GMT+2, but could soon be GMT+3. So that would be 2 hours ahead of BST.
