Where did you hear that? It's not true, it's the same as it has always been with you buying a visa if you intend on leaving the Sharm area.

Well, actually you do need a visa to visit Sharm, however this is free. You mark your landing card Sharm, and a South Sinai only. Your passport is then stamped (that is the visa) & away you go.

Don't normally disagree with you Steve, but the stamp is not the visa.

From the consulate site: Nationals from UK , EU and USA travelling to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts ONLY, for a maximum of 14 DAYS, do not require a visa prior to travelling as a free entry permission stamp will be granted upon arrival. If they intend to travel outside of the above mentioned areas they MUST obtain a Visa.

Let's not confuse things either as while it might be straight forward to you and me, for first timers it can be a bit confusing!

So no, you don't need a visa for Sharm unless you are going outside the area including Ras Mohamed National park
