Where is Aquaba?

Can anyone tell us where this is? Also, is it possible to visit Jordan by ferry etc without having to do Petra? Thanks.

Hi,

Map link here:

Yes, you can use ferries but they are not always reliable. Sorry, I don't know details; hopefully someone else will help.

2nd map to show Sinai & resorts more clearly:

Is not possible to visit Jordan from Taba/TabaHeights unless you are on the pre-booked excursion to Petra....The only way is to use the scheduled ferry from Nuweiba which is unreliable and absolutly filthy.....

Thanks. Have looked at the price of the Petra excursion and because we would be taking our 15 yr old son , it would cost us about 600 pounds. Wont be seeing Jordan then!

Jordan can however be done overland via Israel and although I have never done it many posters have said it is a far cheaper option....

Hi I travelled from Egypt to Petra overland in February, we used the Israeli Eilat border but travelled to Jerusalem before we got to Jordan. There was an exit tax from Israel which cost about £20. In comparison the exit tax from Jordan was 15 Jordanian Dinar (JOD) plus the £35 ferry ticket which are notoriously unreliable from the Egypt side but quite reliable from the Jordan side!?. Another option is to enter overland via Israel and go back to Egypt by ferry.

The Israel border option is a quicker and cheaper option and right on your doorstep in Taba.

It is possible not to go to Petra this is a 2.5 hour drive from Aqaba.

Aqaba is a nice town to rummage about in but the public beaches in the town are usually occupied by fully clothed families having picnics. It is possible to arrange a glass bottom boat tour from there.

There are resort beaches about 7km out of Aqaba - taxi costs £5 but they charge £20-50 per person for beach access! (e.g Movenpick and Radisson)

I would highly recommend a trip to Wadi Musa Desert from Aqaba famed by Lawrence of Arabia - it is only an hour by taxi and would cost £20 each way. You can arrange a desert tour by jeep or camel on arrival at the visitors centre. Loads of good information is on this website:-
