Four month trip to SavuSavu

We are planning a four month trip to SAVUSAVU for the spring of 2014. Our housing is already set but we are looking for any tips on how to get from NAN to SAVUSAVU. Has anyone taken a taxi to SUVA and taken the ferry from there or would you recommend just flying. Thanks. Anything else you would care to comment on would be appreciated.

Lucky you having four months in Fiji. Am so envious.

Guess it depends how quick you want to get to Savusavu. Haven't taken the ferry or been to SavuSavu.

Flying with Pacific Sun will be much quicker. Flights can be booked through the website for Fiji Air. Island Hoppers have charter service from Nadi to Savusavu. Takes around 4 hours to get from Nadi to Suva by cab, opposed to a short flight from Nadi to Savusavu. Bus service is another option. Cheaper than a cab. Will take longer unless you get the express as buses make various stops along the way.

Another thing to consider, ferries don't run every day. Depending when you arrive, you may have to spend a day or so on the mainland before heading to Savusavu. You will also have to overnight on the ferry. Bligh Shipping offer ferry service. Schedules/prices on their website.

Coming from the states, you will need an adapter angled for Australia for charging camera, laptop batteries, etc. We also take a small power strip. Allows us to charge more than one battery at the same time.

For other suggestions of what to take with you.

Hope this helps.

The island of Vanua Levu on which the town of SavuSavu is, is still unspoiled with most of the tourism being on Viti Levu. The vegetation is lush and really beautiful.. Vanua Levu does not have the beautiful beaches of Viti Levu, to the nort hthey are better lovely but the scenery is amazing and trips to the waterfalls are worth the walk. You are very lucky to have this experience. The trip from Suva by Ferry can be a rough ride depending on the weather. The flight is amazing over the mountains then the beautiful coral reefs. You used to be able to get a ferry from RakiRaki area across too no sure if that still runs but is a much shorter trip and worth looking into..SavuSavu is a lovely little town with the Copra Shed a great place to meet people. Enjoy you stay.

re the ferry from Rakiraki area - we did it a few years ago, but it was then discontinued. Have not heard that it has started up again, but worth finding out as it was a good trip. We came back from Savusavu on it, and it took us right into Lautoka.

Oh how wonderful for you! We haven't taken the ferry, but did fly from Nadi to SavuSavu last year. It was a nice easy trip. I hope you let us know how your trip goes. I can't wait to go back!!!

Bula Michael, There are 2 passenger ferries that leave from Suva to Savusavu. MV Suilven (now owned by Venu Shipping 00679 339 5000) & Lomaiviti Princess (owned by Goundar Shipping 00679 8853085) standard fare at the moment is FJ$55 one way, the trip is 12hours it's very long, for that standard fare you'll have to sleep on the floor, unless you upgrade. Both these ferries leave Suva @ 1800hrs, there is also another ferry that leaves from Natovi (just north of Suva Airport) which is actually in Nausori, called the MV Westerland(owned by Bligh Water Shipping 00679 3318247) bit more regular few hours faster then the 2 mentioned above. Telephone numbers above, so you can confirm their schedule before you arrive, as they are subject to change now and then. I would recommend the flight. LC. Savusavu

Bula. You've chosen a great place for a 4 month break away. We loved the place so much we moved here, my husband 10 years ago and me over 6 years ago. Feel free to ask any questions.

Re ferries, there is also an early morning ferry from Natovi with Patterson's Shipping ph 3315644. This is a day trip across to Nabouwalu which is very scenic but then a long bumpy and dusty or boggy bus trip to Svsv. The Westerland also leaves from Lautoka Sunday's 3pm last I heard, ph # as above. Ferry schedules are not always as advertised, best to phone on arrival if doing the ferry thing and plan from there.

Easiest but most expensive is flying into Svsv. You can also fly into Labasa, but would need a taxi/mini-bus to Svsv. Can give you ph #'s if needed. Note that domestic air flight has luggage restriction of 15 kilos, so will need to pay excess baggage in all likelihood, they're getting really strict. Can always send excess thru CDP (courier) which is quite cheap.

Look forward to meeting up with you when you're here.

Thank you for all the great information. Are fruits and vegetables easily obtained at the markets? Particularly green vegetables such as spinach or kale? Do you have other suggestions as to what to bring?
