First time to Goa and Cochin

Hi there,

I am wondering if there is any advice out there for a first time traveler to India.

We are planning to travel as a family to India for two weeks in December 2017. We would like to visit Goa, and we have heard that Cochin is a lovely place to visit. We will likely fly via Mumbai.

We are interested in beaches, history and special cultural experiences. The trip would be medium paced - parents are in their 50s, and the three of us in our 20s.

- How long is recommended to stay in Goa?

- How long do you need in Cochin if we are interested in spending a night on a rice barge?

- How should we travel between Goa and Cochin, flight, train or drive?

- Which stops along the way are recommended?

- Is there anything that we should not miss out on while we are in the Kerala/Karnataka area?

- Should we spend time in Mumbai or not?

Thanks for your help, if anyone replies :)

You may be trying to do too much in a two week holiday. You could look into Booking flights from home to Mumbai and home from Cochin . Then you could spend one night in Mumbai when you arrive and a night or two in Kerala on the way home. From Mumbai Goa is a one hour flight. From Goa to Cochin there are no direct flights so you have to travel via other cities , we flew via Bangalore and it took 3 hours (2 x 1 hour flights and 1 hour stopover). You can go by overnight train from Goa to Cochin and this takes around 16 hours.

In Goa the north has the more lively resorts and the south more beach based quiet places. I recommend Candolim in the north from which you could also visit Calangute and Baga . These resorts are that close you could walk between all 3 on the beach in around an hour. Agonda beach in the south is good too. As it is only a 2 hour taxi trip between Candolim and Agonda you could even spend a few days in each , the airport is roughly half way between the two.

Enjoy planning your holiday !

2. Re: First time to Goa and Cochin

Thanks for your advice yorkietourer.

We have provisionally booked to fly into Mumbai, spend 3 days.

Then fly to Goa, spend 5 days.

And then fly to Cochin (via Bangalore) and spend a further 5 days. We will then fly home out of Cochin as you suggested.

While in Kerala, what would be the top experiences?

Can anyone suggest an itinerary - I have seen some saying Kochi - Munnar - Thekkady - Alleppy (house boat) - Kovalum - Kochin.

I think this is too much to do in 5 days - which are the best places to visit?

Thank you!

You are definitely trying to do too much in 5 days. Kochi to Munnar took us 5 hours in a taxi, and you would want a couple of days there. Kovalam is also a long way from Koch. Just pick 2 from your list. The houseboats at Allepey are very nice. Munnar is beautiful.

Ask on the Kerala forum for more advice.

We did Kovalam to Cochin via Munnar and Alleppey but it involves around 4 hour drives between each destination so could be too much for 5 days , especially as you will be returning back to Cochin.

I suggest when you arrive in Cochin drive straight to Munnar (4hrs) and spend 2 nights. From Munnar to Alleppey (4Hrs) spending 1 night on house boat (most leave before midday) or as we did , Take a local ferry route on the backwaters ( around Rs20 return for 2 hour journey each way) and spend the night in a homestay. This is not as romantic as a house boat but avoids being anchored up for 12 hours with little to do after having dinner. You could also explore Alleppey beach in the evening. Next day back to Cochin to explore and perhaps take in a Kathakali show before flying home the next day. We hired a car and driver for the duration at very reasonable cost. I'll Message you some details.

Hi yorkietourer and pusscat54

Thanks for all the advice.

In the end, we have decided to stay in Northern Goa but in two different areas - first for three days near the beach in Candolim as you suggested yorkietourer, and then for two days in Old Goa.

Next, we are heading to Alleppey (flying to Kochi via Bengalore) and staying adjacent to Lake Vembanad for two nights, followed by one night upon a house boat, and then the final two nights back in Kochi. We decided to not do too much as you have suggested, and just picked Alleppey and Kochi!

So looking forward to it. Now to plan the adventures along the way.

Kathy
