Depends on what you want at night and what you need around you.

The north is moe lively with great night life, lots of clubs open until the wee hours.

The south is quieter and more calm.

Do you want it busy or quiet? In general north Goa is busier than the south which is quieter and less frenetic. The Holiday Inn in Cavelossim is a nice hotel with a lovely pool situated on a beautiful stretch of beach. It's a 20 minute stroll along the beach into Cavelossim village which has a good selection of shacks, restaurants and shops. There are 4 shacks on the beach close to the Holiday Inn and a couple of restaurants within easy walking distance. There's a taxi rank outside the hotel if you want to go into Cavelossim on an evening.

Bianks,

It mainly depends on what type of holiday/honeymoon you're both looking for.

North Goa is more busy with high numbers of tourists. It also offers a wide variety of bars and restaurants to choose from in its 3 main resorts of Baga, Calangute and Candolim. There are 2 very popular night markets both held on Saturday evening and a day market held on Wednesday.

South Goa has a more laid back feeling to it, with less tourists and a quieter atmosphere. If you want peace and quiet and to just chill out on its very popular beaches then the South might be to your liking whereas the North is more busier (some might say hectic) with a lot more on offer to do in the evenings.

Hope this has helped you in some way in making your choice, good luck for the future.

we're also now looking at catching a train from Punjab (or delhi) down to Goa.

How long would this take and are there many interesting stops along the way or is it better to fly straight to Goa?

Better fly! Train from Dehli is 30 odd hours!

if you want to take in a few other parts of India then the sights around Agra including Taj Mahal are incredible and Uduipur is very nice.. I once hired a driver for a week from Delhi. visited Agra, jaipur and uduipur then i flew to Goa from Ahmedibad . i think South Goa is more Honeymoony than north.

You should finalize on the way you want the honeymoon to be. The hotels you book should be based on that. In Goa, you can enjoy the exotic honeymoon in Taj Vivantha to a stay in a home stay hut near the beach. :)
