Palm squirrel

The cute little squirrels we see in Goa are called palm squirrels.

Just read a nice article in the Mail on line (Daily Mail) about an orphan palm squirrel.

They are confused with chip munks because they have 3 stripes down their backs.

They make a noise like a bird.

It confused some twitchers staying with me who thought they had found a new species.

I have a few in my garden and you have to look high up the trees for them.

The Daily Mail article was about a man finding a baby palm squirrel in Sri Lanka and it slept in his shirt pocket.

It says they are often orphaned because predators kill them but if not they sometimes live to 5 years.

when we stayed at silver sands there were loads in the trees and they were in the guttering and roof tiles in reception. Always wondered what they were called....locals couldn't come up with an English name.

Some squirrels can be tame if use to human contact, the park not far from me you can feed them nuts from your hands :)

The ones in Goa are known as "Shiva" squirrels (after the 3 stripes).

Rats with good P.R. if you ask me!
