What to look for in Kullu Dussehra ?

We are panning to visit Kullu - Manali in Oct. 2010. What are the special attractions/ things to look for/participate in Kullu Dussehra Festival. Are there any special shopping or fairs ?

Dusserah is one of the major festival in Kullu. The main events take place in the big ground just beside the Manali bound road. Its a colurful event, but extremely crowded with local people, it is difficult to get any scope to move around the fair. You may have a glimpse of the fair enroute Manali from Kullu.

Hi,

Dussehra Festival is a week long In Kullu.Major ceremony is on the first day with Rath ride .Rest of the days it is kind of a fair with lot of shops of local shawls and handicrafts.

If you are planning do attend the first day ceremony.

Kullu Dussera is little different from the 'Ravan' effigy burning Dussera normally celebrated in North India. It'a 7 day long celebration.

In Kullu Dussera various Deities of the reagion are brought to Kullu for Dussera. The deities are accompanied by throngs of people and they reach Kullu Dusshera with colorful procession in highly decorated palanquins.

The presiding deity of the event, Lord Ram arrives from Sultanpur on a chariot and is pulled by devotees.

As a closing ceremony of the festival, grass is burned on the banks of River Beas and all deities then bid farewell to Lord Ram with promise to return next year. Then all local deities return to their respective temples.
