wife 3 months pregnant. Can she travel to leh & ladakh?

Hello,

My wife will be 3 months pregnant when we start for our leh & ladakh trip.

I want to know (ideally from couples who have toured leh & ladakh with the wife pregnant) if it is ok for my wife to travel or not? If yes, what are the precautions to take?

Regards, BDNDB

Better to consult your doctor.

You probably won't find a doc that is happy about this . First and last three months are the most sensitive in pregnancy . Early in pregnancy one may have to deal with nausea even without the altitude component , later breathing while lying down becomes labored.

If you are willing to invest substantial time and money : discuss with a specialist going first to Srinagar , spend minimum two nights at Gulmarg , and fly in to Leh. Absolute no-nos would be sleeping at 4000+ meters : forget about Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri , Manali-Leh ...reckless , IMO.

It would be better if you dont travel to Ladakh. In addition to the pregnancy symptoms, AMS may affect your wife. Plus the only option to visit places of interest in Ladakh like Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri, Pangong Tso, would require atleast 5-7 hours of cab journey, which can be quite tiring.

There are no magic tricks here : one can

* invest in more time for a slow approach up to Leh , and be content with staying at that altitude

* invest in using a LOT of medical grade oxygen ( NOT the hairspray can models sold in Manali etc )

* or ... actually , that's it. No responsible doc will prescribe preventive medication for a pregnant woman , esp. this early in the pregnancy.

All other choices comes with some risk for the unborn , and if any birth defect appear you will ask yourself if altitude was involved. And keep on asking yourself. So will your doc.

I have lived near the Arctic Circle most of my life , which is even less populated than most parts of Ladakh as soon as you leave the coast. In spite of that I find it hard to understand the obsession with going high , fast and unsafe to the Tso's etc. Ladakh has tons of of both nature and cultural attractions , practically all around Leh's altitude. Alchi is even lower.

Not advisable at all even if you acclimatise at lower altitudes.

Thank you all for the prompt responses.

I feel that the docs want to play safe rather than actually doing some diagnosis.

"and if any birth defect appear you will ask yourself if altitude was involved. And keep on asking yourself. So will your doc."

The above pretty much sealed it for me I guess.

i will say no no.....

i went to mumbai with my wife who was 3 months pregnant. we toured whole day to gateway of india. meuseum. hanging garden. chaupati. haji ali and last in juhu she started bleeding. resulting in obortion.

dont take chance. roads in ladakh are in bad shape. bumpy roads are not good for pregnant women.
