Bandipur is closed between 9- pm to 6 am
If you leave B'lore by 2 PM, the earliest (assuming traffic is low and you are not held up) you can reach Mysore is around 5:00 PM. You have 2 options from here.
Option 1 is to drive out to Bandipur (a distance of 80 Kms from Mysorereach there by 8 PM) and stay the night at one of the resorts at Bandipur, do a morning Safari and reach Ooty by noon.
Option 2 is to stay at Mysore and leave the next morning to Ooty bia Bandipur (you can still do the morning Safari, but you will need to leave Mysore by 5 AM).
It is quite safe to drive after 6 PM on the forest routes for there are quite a few vehicles plying that road. If you are not used to forest driving at night, tag behind one of the vehicles, preferably a bus or a lorry and you should be OK. Even otherwise, it is quite safe. Just keep a look out for animals and if you see any, pull over to the side, do not honk, dim your lights and let them pass.
Elephants are a bit tricky and the safest is to keep a good distance from them. If you see any on the road, be sure to check the other side of the road for others of the herd. Normally, grazing herds on both sides of the road are cut off by vehicles focusing on one side and that is asking for trouble. Simply stop well before the animals and let them pass. You should be fine.
Bangalore to Ooty is around 270 kms.Bangalore- Mysore easily takes around 3- 4 hours minimum(`140 kms.) depending on the traffic in Bangalore City limits upto Bidadi.
Beyond Mysore its fine. But generally night driving in the forests is better avoided since it is known to be active with wild animals during nights & visibility is limited.
