100% Hotel Deposits

Hi

My wife and I am coming to Kerala in April, it will be our first trip to India. Normaly when we travel, we tend to organise our own packages rather than booking through an agency.

We've found a hotel that we like, but they've requested a 100% deposit to hold the room. Is this normal for India or Kerala, normally we're able to secure a room with a credit card number only.

Cheers

Which hotel is it?

If it is not peak season, you perhaps don't need to book it.

But to be on the safer side, tell them you will pay only 20% because that is how you have been traveling around the world.

And if they don't agree then politely tell them, you then have no option but to look for a diff place.

No one usually takes full payment. sometimes 50% is the max. But no such rules apply, it is subjective.

You can call and speak to them, an international call makes them feel more secured about your booking.

Chek the credentials of the hotel well, reviews & pics. If you really like it negotiate on 25% (if nothing moves ask to speak to the manager).

It all depends on how you handle it.

Whenever you book a hotel room through their website oer the net, hotels ask for one night's room rent as a deposit through credit card.Incase you don't turn up for any reason, they will charge you for one night's rrom rent to your credit card. This is normal practice most parts of europe or in general world wide.

However this practice is not followed so strictly in India specially in off seasons. The hotel accepts your reservations over phone or by fax message or by e-mail.

April is the tail end of tourist season for Kerala and you should have no problem in getting a room in any city of Kerala.Suggest you not to worry and check alternative good hotel if the former hotel is keen on having 100% deposite. Most likely you may get the same hotel when you walk into their lobby without any reservation!!

Have a nice trip.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We're planning on staying at the Deshadan in Varkala. It ticks all our boxes, is in our price range and seems to have great reviews on here.

They've also been very helpful in arranging a Back Water trip. We're very happy with the communication and help we've received so far but found it unusual that they're requesting a 100% deposit.

I haven't spoken to the hotel about this yet as i wasn't sure whether or not this is usual practise fro India\Kerala.

Cheers

Dear Rich,

I contacted them now. It is their policy to collect 100% deposit pprior to arrival. Any way it is not any where else. Please double check cancellation policy with them.

Regards,

Hi Rich

It is great that you are visiting Kerala - The God's own country.

It is general practice among Indian hotels to charge 100% deposit for first night stay. It would be much easier to book through tour operator in India who can offer you some discount and charge only 50% advance deposit & balance on your arrival. Tour operator can guarantee you the room in the desired hotel due to his reputation in that area.

regards

Lucky
