Allepey or Kumarkom- Are both similar backwater experience?

We are a party of 3 adults traveling to Kerala in end December and want to spend a night on the famed backwater houseboats in kerala. Our first choice was Muthoot houseboats in Allepey, but we have not found acco for our prefered date. Someone suggested we try Kumarkom instead.

Does Kumarkom offer the same backwater experience as Allepey? which one is mroe authentic? Also some suggestions for operators of luxury 2 bedroom houseboats in these places?

Hi Travels,

Allepey is best. Kumarokom is like wide ocean.

you dont need a luxuary boat for the cruise, just make sure you have a upper deck, all the premium boats have upper deck . also the primium boats have minimum luxuary, the food is great on board.

Cheers

shile

Kumarakom and Alleppey are two corners of Vembanad lake. Kumarakom have some excotic reports (really expensive too) while in Alleppey found the raheems residency to be of great value. Alleppey was a small time trading town during the British era. So you can spend your time shopping, hitting the beach, cycling through the alleys. It's more a town, then a village.

Kumarakom on the other hand is compartively laid back. Most people just chill at the the resort as the there is nothing much other than paddy fields and toddy shops.

If you are keen to spend your time @ a beach. I suggest you book a place near marrai beach. which ain't far from Kumarakom and Alleppey.

Cheers and enjoy your stay

I would suggest you not to drop the idea of visiting Alleppey as it is the hub of backwater tourism. I would suggest you to go for "COCO Planet Tours". They offer good accommodation and the boats are well furnished with attached bathrooms. Fresh meals are prepared for you on the boat and the staff is very attentive and hospitable.

Moreover, Allepey and Kumarakom are siatuated on either side of Vemband Lake, so you can access the place. Also Kumarakom is a must visit to explore the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.

Locations like Munnar, Thekkady etc., would be ideal for an honeymoon trip comparing to houseboats as the weather is good and also offers a lot of privacy. You may try Cherai or Marari for a good beach experience.
