Karmakerala: Alleppey Houseboat (3 bed, Overnight)

We (a bunch of academics from the UK) have just booked for a 3 bedroom Alleppey Roundtrip Houseboat with karmakerala.com for Feb 17, 2013. We chose their Premium Houseboat option - A/C after dinner till 7AM. They are headquartered in the UK (Scotland) and have a local team in Cochin.

Email exchanges and booking was exttremely efficient with prompt responses -- we paid 30% upfront through bank transfer.

Will report here on the experience since we did not find too many posts on karmakerala.

Peter, Sorry got that wrong. They have three categories: Luxury, Superior and Standard. We chose Superior (it is confusing with all these categories!) and that provides A/C only in the night.

Hi Edin,

There are 3 types of houseboats- AC Deluxe/ Premium and luxury. Among this AC Deluxe AC wil be provided on from 9am to 7am in the morning.

PLease re check. And an average cost for a good AC Deluxe houseboat starts from INR 7000/-

Posting an update following our trip on Feb 17-18, 2013. Arrived around noon to be met by agent -- KarmaKerala subcontracts to Picakadly Boats, which inturn used one of CoCo Houseboats for our trip. So, a bit roundabout. I had asked for photographs of the houseboat but got some generic HB photos rather than the exact one since they could not promise this for the Superior Class.

The boat was clean and satisfactory: 3 bedrooms although we saw many newer boats with better canopies on the water. The crew were very nice and the food was simple and excellent. We ended up choosing to buy some extra crab (cooked deliciously -- recommended) and large prawns for dinner.

We docked at a very nice place at night with great vistas, including opportunities for a swim and walk along paddy fields. Only minor hitch was that the A/C kept tripping a few times during the night (apparently due to the houseboat battery not being able to hold charge; required during power cuts) and the room became a bit hot/stuffy while the crew tried to run the boat engine (noisy) to get this to work. Apparently, they were in the process of ordering a new battery.

Highlight was the wonderful sunrise and food. Overall, good experience. Would have been useful to know that this was a sub-contracted HB right at the beginning (since CoCo HB have their own websites) but dealings with the contact (Tijo from Karma Kerala) was very prompt.

And it also depends on (luxury or premium) how much you paid for the boat.

Hello Edinprof,

happy that you enjoyed the trip

would be interesting to know that was a premium or luxury? and the rates , if you dont mind.

I think this is one issue of subcontracting and the rates get higher with each middle agent

This extra crab purchase is to be done carefully

there has been many issues of food poisoning , as they would sell items kept it in the freezer for many days and also it earns a commission for the crew as well
