Is it really essential to do a houseboat?

Just wondered if seeing the backwaters via ferries is just as viable or would I really be missing out?

Thanks

I think the small canoes are pretty interesting, they go to all the small places that houseboats can't. The houseboats also offer a very nice relaxed experience, you have your own crew that feeds you and looks after you and I don't think a ferry has the same feel.

Myself and my wife travelled to Kerala a couple of years ago with friends, They choose a houseboat and had a poor experience,In fact moaned for most of the next day !

On their return we deceided to go for a short canoe trip instead i the Munroe Island Backwaters.

This was absolutly the highlight of our holiday, we had a canoe guide that pointed out all the plants, birds, reptils, fruits, as we slowly punted through the narrow canals, No noise no diesel smell, wonderful trip.will be back in a few years to do it again.

Seeing the backwaters via ferries can be more interesting. Routes like Kottayam - Alleppey on a working day - choose 08.30 AM. - can be excellent than having a houseboat cruise in crowded Alleppey backwaters in New Year.

For comfort, luxury and good food, choose a nice backwater resort.

seeing the backwaters by the ferries would be the most economical way and you wouldn't be missing the experience of the backwaters and the life around it by taking a ferry . Infact it gives you a chance to mix with the locals

but for a more personalized service , stay and food while you cruise etc you may take a houseboat

thanks for the replies. I'm not fussed about personal service, and I'm sure I can always sample the food at one of the many places to eat in the area rather than on a boat?

I go to a country to mingle with its people (cant stand ppl that stay only at expensive resorts and never meet a local) so I think a ferry sounds like a good option. Think I might take the ferry in the morning to kottayam as suggested and then maybe take an afternoon canoe tour.

Can I get a canoe tour in kottayam to some of the lesser known backwaters?

Thanks :-)

Hello Symbiosis001,

you may also look at the option of Alleppey- Kollam ferry service, which is an 8 hour trip through the entire stretch of backwaters between two districts
