Time of year and ideas

We're in the very early stages of planning a trip to Kerala with our 8 & 10 year olds. What time of year is best for travel and what is a good 2 week itinerary for our family (we've never travelled to India)

Kerala is an all season destination. But the best time of the year will be August to September. You can get some ideas on what to do in kerala with kids at http://goo.gl/5smMS0

Hi Leet

Welcome to kerala

The prefered month varies from person to person. The months march-may is bit hot and ideal places in this time is hill stations.June-july is monsoon month and you can expect heavy shower.

Rates will be lessin these times in hotels. In dec 20-Jan 5 premium rates are applicable in hotels

In planning i suggestto make arrival in cochin and departure from trivandrum.

you may consider following while planning

Cochin-Heritage-Half day

Munnar-Hill station-2-3 days

Thekkady-Wild life-1-2 days

Gavi-Forest-1 day

Kumarakom-Back water resorts-1 day

Alapuzha-House boat-1 day

Varkala-Beaches-1-2 days

Kovalam-Beaches-1-2 days

Poovar-Island-1 day

Kanyakumari-sun rise and set-1 day

Trivandrum-1 day-Departure

You may select placesof your intrest and omit others in this list for making the itinerary.i have arranged the places in travelling order

I have includedboth south and central Kerala

furthur if you want to explore northern kerala you may add calicut- 1 day, Wayanad-3-4 days

You may travel from trivandrum to calicut either by air or by train

Kerala is a 365 days destination!! Every season has its own specialties!!

mid September to January is the peakest tourist season here, with pleasant climate.

If the summers in march and April bothers you it will be sunny days to go out with kids. If you would like to experience the monsoon rains June to August will be perfect with off season rates too.

The coastal areas (beaches and backwaters) are ideal to visit during the winters, which is the main tourist season. You can visit from October-March, April-June is extremely hot and it rains heavily from June-Sept.

Whereas, the Nilgiri mountains (Munnar, Thekkady-Periyar, Wayanad) are monsoon destinations, ideal to visit during the rainy season when one can see lush green mountain side, waterfalls. It is however not attractive during the dry season (Feb-May).

Most important tourist attractions can be easily covered in 10days.

Dear leet,

The good time to travel to Kerala is from middle of September to end of February. September is considered as off season and you get good prices for some reputed hotels in Kerala.

2 nights in Trivandrum to visit palaces and to be familier with the country.

If you are planning for September, you may include some of the snake boat races in Central Kerala and an overnight stay in Houseboat in Alleppey.

1 night in Periyar to visit Spice plantations.

2 nights in the Tea plantations of Munnar.

2 nights in Parambikulam Tiger reserve / Periyar reserve

2 nights in Thrissur to witness temple festivals / ceremonies with decorated elephants.

3 nights in Kannur beach

Fly out of Kozhikode airport.
