3-4 weeks itinerary help, please?

We are two couples planning on travelling through KERALA in the month of January 2015.

We are starting from Kozhikoe airport and returning to Mumbai from Trivandrum airport.

We are planning on doing some trekking and doing a houseboat tour and bike riding and lots of sightseeing.

If anyone has ideas of what to see or hotels or guides that they recommend for us I would appreciate hearing from you and your experience.

Please mention number of days you would be traveling.

Ideally you could cover Wayanad, Munnar, Thekkady, Kumarakom / Alleppey, Kovalam.

But all depends on number of days !!

Hi Deb

Good to arrive in Kozhikode and depart from Trivandrum. January is a good time to witness temple festivals with decorated elephants in central Kerala. Recommend to avail a Innova car for the complete trip. You may check out this itinerary.

Hi,

Since you are arriving in Kozhikode, you may plan like this:

Day 1 – Arrival at Kozhikode and Transit to Bekal (train to Kasargod or cab)

Day 2 – Spend the day at Bekal fort and beach.

Day 3 – Boating in Northern Kerala (which is a different from what South Kerala has to offer). Transit to Wayanad and check into a resort there.

Day 4 – Day 8 – Visit Wayanad and its attractions. Trekking can be done as suggested by Arun –Tina.

Day 9 – Athirapally – Vazhachal

Day 10 – 13 – Munnar and its attractions (again second the trekking plan from Arun – Tina)

Day – 14-16 – Thekaddy

Day 16-19 – Kumarakom – bird sanctuary, museum, canoeing and cycling through the heart of rural Kerala. Take the houseboat to Alappuzha(overnight) and visit Alappuzha town on Day 19. Take the evening train (cab would be a waste of money) to Varkala.

Day 20 – 21 – Expore Varkala – beaches, cliffs and an old temple

Day 22 – 24 – Kovalam and Trivandrum

As regards hotels, you can expect the ordinary hotels to the best resorts in the world. Selection is dependent on the budget. Guides would not be necessary other than when you go trekking.

@ Deb

For the houseboat tour, I would suggest doing an overnight stay in one - usually they leave from Alleppey, wind their way through the back waters, tie up at a desolate island for the night, and continue next day.

You can enter many resorts at Kumarakom through the water, hence it would be a good idea to stay a few days in Kumarakom (there are at least 10 good resorts with reasonable prices)

I also highly recommend staying at a home stay - these are often traditional houses, well equipped (some are 100+ years old) and gives you a unique way of experiencing something non-touristy. They tend to be close to fields - hence you can also walk along cottages / fields.

DO spend at least 2-3 days in Cochin. Fort Kochi itself is ok - but the Casino hotel (nope - they don't have a casino - it is just their name!) is fantastic since they have converted the earlier palace into a hotel. A tad expensive - but worth it. If you don't stay there, at least make a day trip and have your lunch here.
