Visiting Kerala 24 May - 31 May 2014

Hello friends,

My wife and I will be arriving in Kochi airport at 10 pm on Sat, 24 May and leaving on Sat, 31 May at 11 pm. First time visitors. Have not made any bookings yet. We are a bit confused and would be grateful for the kind guidance of the members here.

1. Do we need to go thru a travel agency in Kerala or is it ok to hire a driver to take us around while we make our own accommodation bookings for our stay?

2. What would a relaxed itinerary be like? We have been doing research on-line but there's so many things to do and places to visit that we are a bit overwhelmed. Off hand, visiting Munnar seems to be a must and possibly the Chinese fishing nets to eat seafood. Other than that, we are a bit lost.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

Hello,

it is always good to book your accommodation and traveling in advance. Walk in to a hotel may be expensive or may not available. Also you may loose the time for search hotel, vehicle than sightseeing. As long as you have day 24-31, may following is suitable.

Summer is going in Kerala also, but end of May, you can enjoy rainfall also, sometimes

02 Nights in Kochi, coastal town, beach, heritage

03 Nights in Munnar, nature, hill station,

02 Nights in Kumarakom.

This may a good travel plan and you may have enough time for relax, enjoy and good time. Instead of travel long way, plan more time fore sightseeing and relax

Regards

Samson

Thank you for your replies, friends.

Is there anything to visit in or near Thrissur? Reason we ask is because we want to visit a particular recommended Ayurvedic centre there for a few hours and was wondering how best to incorporate this into our itinerary.

Thank you again.

Hi,

If you can do a bit of homework, a seven day trip to Kerala can be done without the aid of a tour operator. The timing of the trip would mean that rains are around. An itinerary would be as follows:

24 – Arrival at Kochi and transfer to hotel in Fort Kochi (an hour away) Old Harbour Hotel is rated hightly by TA

25 – Visit Fort Kochi and local attractions. Take the evening train to Varkala and check into hotel there.

26 – The beach, cliffs and a very old temple at Varkala. Spend the night there.

27 – Take the morning train to Alleppey or Alappuzha, take a houseboat(if weather permits) or a motor boat for a couple of hours cruise in the backwaters of Kerala. Take a cab to Munnar. I expect you to start at about 15.00 hrs and make it to Munnar by 20.00 Hrs. Stay at Chinnakannal, which is incredibly beautiful and in the lap of nature. The Club Mahindra or The Siena Village are highly recommended.

28 – Munnar Sightseeing - Check TA for spots to go to.

29 – Munnar Sightseeing

30 – Munnar Sightseeing and transfer to Thekkady. Stay at Thekkady and if possible at a KTDC hotel which ensures a ticket on the morning boat.

31 – A ride on the boat and the local attractions. Leave for Kochi in the afternoon and reach the airport by 20.00 hrs

Seafood would be better had in Fort Kochi and Varkala. You can book accommodations on your own. You can manage without a full time cab till you get to Alappuzha. From there onwards you would require a full time driver and a cab.
