Itinerary Help - Kerala visit?

Hello Travellers

we are thinking of visiting Kerala for around 2-3 weeks at the end of this year.

We like wildlife/nature/boutique hotels/Indian cuisine/Temples.

Since we are not that young anymore, we would love to hear a suggestion for an itinerary which allows us to stay in places for at least 2-3 days until moving on to the next place.

We would love to see the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai & Peryar National Park. I have chosen Kerala because the Malaria Risk is low (allergic reaction to malaria prophilaxes). We enjoy walking through nature and like photography but are also interested in getting to know the Indian culture. This would be our first trip to India.

Which are the MUST SEE sights in the area?

Which are the best hideaway nature places?

Any Itinerary suggestions?

I have read that the visa is expensive but not sure if there is a VISA on arrival available ?

ANY help would be greatly appreciated even if suggesting a different area (remember it has to be malaria free/low risk) to visit - I haven't yet made up my mind completely and are open to any good ideas!

Many thanks in advance, looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi manu

welcome to kerala :)

3 weeks is a good time to enjoy kerala

The basic thing to be done to book arrival and departure from two different airports which will helps you a lot of time & even money too.you may select airports after you have finalised the intrested places.

Following are the main attractions in kerala :)

Trivandrum-an international airport is available here.the famous sree padhbanamy swamy temple is in trivandrum.other major attractions are palaces, zoo, museums etc.near to trivandrum, you have kovalam beaches & poovar island.even you can do day trip to kanyakumari from kovalam.another nearby place is neyyar which has a combination of lion safari park, deer park, crocodile park and an elephant centre.but this is no so great and i just included since you mentioned wild life as your intrest.you can spend upto a minimum if 3 days and max of 5 days for covering all this.

Varkala-This is also a famous beach and main attraction is combination of beach and cliff here.1-2 days is sufficient for this.

Cochin-its also having an internarional airport.cochi is rich in culture and heritage.1 day is sufficient to cover all these spots in cochin.

Munnar-This is one of the must to do destination in kerala.its a beautiful hill station and lots of attractions are here to visit.spending 3-4 days in munnar is a great idea.

Thekkady-This is another wild life area and perhaps only santuary in india where wild life watching is done through boating.dont forget to visit elephant junction where you can do elephant ride, bath, shower & feeding.various eco tourism activities like bamboo rafting, forest walk, nature walk, tiger trail, tribal colony visit etc are arranged by tourism department.you may even do a day trip to gavi forests from thekkady.you can spend 3-4 days here to cover all things.

Kumarakom-its famous for back waters and lots of back water resorts are available here.a famous bird santuary is here and is worth to visit.also a unique bay drift museum is available.you may spend 2 days here.

Alapuzha-its also famous for backwaters.do a houseboat journey either day trip or overnight stay here.Ambalapuzha sree krishna temple is also near to alapuzha

A possible itinerary you may look is

Trivandrum>kovalam>varkala>kochi>munnar>madurai>thekkady>kumarakom>alapuzha>kochi

If you want to extend furthur, you may include north kerala.

Wayanad-its having a couple of wild life santuaries and if lucky you can even spot tigers.there are lots of attractions in this hill station.spend 4-5 days here.

Calicut-calicut is nearby airport/railway station from wayanad.you may reach calicut from cochin and proceed to wayanad.you may depart back home from calicut if you are including wayanad.

Else arrive at trivandrum and depart from cochin or vice versa as per above itimerary.
