Kearala area ideas and recommendations

We (hubby and I) will be flying into Kochi from either Jaipur or Udaipur towards the end of August 2011 ( hoping the rains will be done by then!) and I need some advise. Our budget is for superior (4 star) venues, not necessarily luxurious.

1. Should we spend a day or two in Kochi? If yes, suggestions on what to see and where to stay.

2. What's the best/quickest way to get from Kochi to the Kerala area?

3. Recommendations for a homestay. Looking for a nice place, don't mind paying a bit more than usual, but would like to get a lot of local flavor. We are willing to do all sorts of trekking during the day, but need a very comfy, clean, large bed at night!

4. Recommendations for houseboat. One or two nites?

5. Best way to get back to Mumbai from Kerala area.

Thanks!

Kochi *is* the Kerala area :) You can spend a night here, because it has a very quaint heritage district (Fort Kochi) that you can explore, and there are some interesting monuments and places as well.

From there the backwaters are only 1.5 hrs away. You can do a day trip or an overnight trip.

Thanks, Deepa.... I'll add one or two nites in Kochi to the itinerary.

So, do you think that, if we stay in a homestay such as Mapilassery Mansion, for a couple or three nites, we should still go on a houseboat? Or would we be just seeing more of he same, except from a boat?

Would you recommend heading a bit inland, like to Tall Trees by Munnar? Since we live in Hawaii, we really don't need to spend any time at the beach.

Aloha!

Kochi / Cochin / Ernakulam is a city, so if you want to see rural Kerala, you need to drive out from there. Fortunately, Allepey is only 1.5 hours away, and there you can get the whole backwaters experience.

If you had 4 nights I would suggest:

Arrive Cochin, drive to Allepey - overnight Allepey homestay

Day cruise on houseboat - overnight Allepey homestay

Drive to Munnar 4 hrs - overnight Munnar

Munnar sightseeing - overnight Munnar

Drive 4 hrs to Cochin, sightseeing half day and fly out late night

Thanks, Deepa! Looks like a good plan of action. Neither one of us is too crazy about cities, so heading into the more rural area appeals to us. If I can, I may be able to add an additional day to our Kerala experience to really get the relaxation going. The rest of our RTW trip is very action oriented.

Aloha!

Two nights in houseboat in the route Alleppey - Alumkadave. It is an ideal route to relax and experience. Off the beaten track, look for backwaters in Trichur.

My suggestion towards the above plan is

1.Two Nights in Munnar

2. one night in Thekkady

3. One night in Alleppey Houseboat .(Check out from H/B by 09. am and proceed sight seeing in Cochin). evening Depart from Cochin to Mumbai by flight .Another option is by train but it will take 2 days of yours.
