Australian Dollars or US dollars?

Hi

My husband is travelling to Pune for work, he is taking money on a visa debit card, but wants to take cash as well. We have just been informed you can not take in Indian Rupee unless you are a citizen or resident. Do they recognize AUD or should he take US dollars?

Thanks

Lynda

Hi !

My understanding, effective March 2014, Passengers coming to India will have to declare Indian currency exceeding Rs 10,000 being carried by them in the new 'Indian Customs Declaration Form". There was a customs notification to that effect in March 2014.

Accordingly one can bring INR 10,000 for meeting their expenses.

TA friends may validate the above.

Upmarket hotels and restuarants will probably be willing to convert AUD to INR, but transaction cost would be higher. Better carry USD, more widely accepted, easier to convert.

We took AUD, no problem to change at any bank or money changer.

Hi

Though USD is more acceptable than AUD but taking USD will involve 2 times conversion, you have to give service charge 2 times(AUD to USD to INR) so better to bring AUD

Thanx

Australian Dollar is more appropriate, considering u will have to convert them to USD n then INR.

also be alert, the immigration at the mumbai airport is strict for non citizens, and a declaration has to be made by foreigners. .. all the best.

hi lynda,

Saw your post...if he is carrying a visa card he may directly withdraw from ATM machines, if he carry AUD or USD he has to vouch for vendors to get it converted. ask him to carry some INR from Australia itself and rest he may manage himself as he may contact local officials from his company to assist him.

please feel free for any other help or information required.
