Trip advice, short on time and wanting to visit Jaisalmer

Hello. I'm going to be travelling to Indian in mid-late January with my 2 year old son, wife, and parents. We have a few social commitments to attend do which has limited our days available for vacation. A few years back we had the please of touring for two weeks and visiting Dehli, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Varanasi and Khajuraho. We also wanted to hit Jaisalmer but where unable to because of a family wedding. So this time, I'd really like to see it as well as possibly Jodhpur.

Here I could use your guy's help.

We will be in Dahod, Gujarat and could start our trip from there or Vadodara - which ever makes the most sense.

I'd like to make it to Jodhpur and spend maybe a 1/2 - 3/4 day sightseeing there and spending the night before heading to Jaisalemer. In Jaisalemer, would like to spend 2 full days and 1 or 2 nights before heading down to Udaipur via Jodhpur for darshan at Nathdwara and then back home to Dahod. Apart from that, we may want to spend 2-3 hours in Udaipur to shop before heading home. No need to stay there overnight or see any sights since we have all been there at least twice before.

Any ideas on how to make this happen? For transportation we are open to private car and/or plan. Train is also an option but would be less preferred. We need to do this in as few days as possible while at the same time not feeling like the trip is a burden but a vacation.

For example, is it possible/reasonable to make it to Jodhpur from Dahod or Vadodara in one day if we leave very early (say 6am). And if so, about what time could we expect to get there?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

We have confirmed the dates of trip and would now appreciate some suggestions on what to do and see and in what order to do them.

Our travel details are as follows:

1/22: Arrive Jodhpur @ 1:35PM via air

1/26: Depart Jodhpur @ 1:50PM via air

During this time, we would like to see Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. For the trip for Jodhpur to Jaisalmer and back we will be traveling by car to keep our schedle as flexible as possible.

If we arrive on the 22nd in Jodhpur, would it be reasonable to do some shopping and spend the night and then do a 1/2 day of sight seeing on the 23rd?

We would then head for Jaisalmer on the 23rd arriving in the evening and would spend the night there.

We would have all day on the 24th for sight seeing and would spend the night again in Jaisalmer.

On the 25th, we could do about 3/4 of a day of sight seeing/shopping before heading back to Jodhpur to spend the night.

On the 26th we would catch our flight home.

What hotels are recommended for each town? We are looking for something that is 4 star.

Please advise including recommendations/changes as well as what to do/see.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know if a similar trip is possible from Johdpur, but we recently took an overnight train from Jaipur to Jaiselmer to avoid a daytime 6 hour drive. While this is no Palace on Wheels, the 2AC class sleepers were acceptable and we actually got some sleep. A wonderful place to stay in Jaiselmer is the Killa Bhawan, a beautifully restored B & B in the fort.

Thanks!

Any recommendations on places to eat in Jodhpur and Jaisalemer? Our group will have a mix of veg and non-veg folks.

For shopping, any recommendation on places to by furniture, statues, etc? Preferably a place that is willing to ship purchases to the US?
