Jodhpur to Udaipur by car and 1 night stop-off ??

Sorry - this is a loongg post and I apologise for the multitude questions!

We are intending to hire a car/driver to take us from Jodhpur to Udaipur. I want to know if its wise to stop overnight at Ranakpur or Kumbhalgarh, or given that we are quite short of time, or should we just utilise the extra more day/night in Jodhpur or Udaipiur.

Basically, we arrive in Jodhpur on Tuesday morning on the overnight train from Delhi at 8am. We have the whole day there and the night. I was then thinking of setting off the next day (Wednesday) to Ranakpur or Kumbhalgarh and staying the night at one of these towns. Then setting off next afternoon (Thursday) to Udaipur and getting there on Thursday evening. We need to leave Udaipur on Friday morning to attend a wedding about 40kn out of Udaipur.

So, I'd really appreciate some help with the following:

* the best and safest/reputable driver/care hire company for this trip (one-way). how much should we approx be expecting to pay?

* advice on whether this is a rather exhausting itinerary in the short amount of time and we should instead stay in Jodhpur on Tuesday and Wednesday and then on Thursday morning, set off early to drive to Udaipur. How long would this drive realistically take (Jodhpur-Udaipur)? Is it possible to just stop by Ranakpur's Jain temples for an hour or so on the journey?

* OR if it is recommended that we do a stop-off, which is better overall (and more en route) Ranakpur or Kumbhalgarh? How long does it take (hours in a car) to get to:

Jodhpur to Ranakpur

Jodphur to Kumbhalgarh

Ranakpur to Udaipur

Kumbhalgarh to Udaipur

Thank you very very much!

Ranakpur is a lovely place to stay overnight, if you have the right hotel. It is in the hills, is cooler than the rest of Rajasthan and very green. There is also a chance to see some wildlife if you are lucky.

I am also wondering if it is possible to leave Udaipur early in the morning and see both sites, arriving in Jodhpur before dark. We will be traveling in Sept, so the days should be longer. If we do this in one day - how long is needed to see each location and what time should we leave from Udaipur to insure getting into Jodhpur before nightfall.

Hi there

Would you be able to recommend a couple of hotels in Ranakpur?

Thanks!

You don't need to spend the night in Ranakpur unless you want to. We visited both places from Jodhpur. Start early around 7.30am and visit the Kumbhalgarth fort first as the temple in Ranakpur is closed for visitors until 12pm. From Kumbhalgarth it's about a 45 minute journey to Ranakpur, than about another 2 hours from there to Udaipur. We arrived early evening.

If you are short of time then start early as suggested by Chrella and spend night at Udaipur after visiting both places. It is doable.
