Madurai to Kovalam

We are planning to drive from Madurai to Kovalam in one day, over the Western Ghats, which I believe is possible. This will be in early December.

Any suggestions on places to stop for lunch and also any sightseeing opportunities en route. My guide books seem to suggest that there is nothing of interest on the way, which I am sure cannot be the truth.

The actual route from Madurai to Kovalam not via western ghat

Madurai to nagercoil 4 track NH road with center median.

From Nagercoil to Trivandrum (kovalam) a little bit deviation will take you to Kanyakumari where you could halt for lunch and sightseeing

And from Kanyakumari to Kovalam en route you could halt at Padmanabhapuram palace and

thirparuppu waterfalls

Padmanabhapuram palace timing is 9-1 pm and 2-4 pm Monday holiday

The route you are referring to is via Bodi, Cumbum, Thekkady etc. You may plan for your lunch at Thekkady which has a lot of options. Go to good restaurants inside the big hotels. You will have a lot of photo opportunities all along the route as this area is one of the most scenic parts of TN

Is the Madurai to Kovalam route doable in one day via Thekkady. I had previous envisaged Rajapalayam, Kadayanallur and then through the mountains just north of the Thenmala Reservoir.

What the approximate driving time for each and what are the pros and cons for each.

The major portion of the route via kanyakumari is four track so you could drive fast but apart from kanyakumari and Padmanabhapuram palace there are no other significant spots.

The route bvsprasanna mentioned and we thought also that you prefer to drive through western ghat -thekkady route this is a long drive with ghat section as major length and as bvsprasanna mentioned it will be very scenic drive

I think you could reach with 10-11 hours of drive including lunch break

The third route you mentioned is Rajapalayam-Thenkasi-Sengottai-Thenmala-Quilon-Trivandrum-kovalam

The sightseeing spots you could halt over Courtallam-a 5 km deviation from Thenkasi - is full waterfalls

As tamil nadu witnessing a heavy showering for the past of 24 hours and if it continues you may witness full flow of water in waterfalls Another spot is Thenmala which is India's first eco-tourism initiative by Kerala state government http://www.thenmalaecotourism.com/ Halting here for a day is also worth spending time

Would we see tea plantations on any of the routes?

It is around 360 kms and should take close to 10 hrs. This is an interesting route. And you can even do a plantation tour in Thekkady. But the route looked up by you seems shorter and Google says only 277 kms, which is the shortest.

if you are interested in tea plantation you would opt to take thekkady route and halt a night and proceed

I have visited once Thenmala eco-tourism, though you cannot find any tea plantation here but trekking, musical fountain, butterfly safari, boat riding are all feast to senses of an ideal tourist

Both options are there it is up to you to choose
