Trains are the most comfortable way to travel to Agra from Delhi. Bhopal Shatabdi takes two hours, it starts from New Delhi at 6:15 AM and reaches Agra Cantt after two hours.

A cab is second best option, but it's a long journey !

Don't think of driving on your own ! As they say in India you need three things for driving, Good Brakes, Good Horn and Good Luck.

A taxi will come with a chauffeur.

It's better to travel Delhi - Agra by train and hire a local taxi at Agra for siteseeing.

Hi Bubi,

It will depend on ur time you have for Agra. If you only want to see Agra then better to have train and if you want to see Fatehpur-Sikri on the way or Mathura temple then go for cab.

I have been Agra and by cab ..though it's long journey but if you start early in the morning like 5am or 5.30am it will better and you can reach there arnd 9am facing very little traffic.

on return you can see Mathura or Fatehpur-sikri on the way and till evening you can return Delhi......thanks

Dear Bubi -

The best time to see the Taj Mahal is definitely dawn, when the rays of the morning sun turn the marble to a pink gold. You can go at 6:30 a.m., it is really lovely, and you can spend a couple of hours in the grounds before returning to your hotel for breakfast. Dawn is also the best time to avoid crowds. By the time the morning train gets in, the big tour groups start coming in.

For most people, Agra is a stop on the way to Jaipur. So the way to do it is to go from Delhi to Agra, do sightseeing (other monuments), stay overnight in Agra, see Taj at dawn, and then go onwards to Jaipur.

The driving time from your hotel in Delhi to the Taj Mahal in Agra varies depending on the time of the day. If you leave early, it takes 4 to 4.5 hours, and if you leave later it takes 5 hours.

If you take the train, the time from your hotel to the Taj Mahal is about 3.5 hours (1 hour in Delhi, 2 hours in the express train, 30 minutes in Agra).

One hour for getting to New Delhi Railway Station is probably too much, at morning in that much time one can reach here even from the farthest corner of the city. If you are staying at Con naught Place or nearby area, it'll take only 15 minutes or so add another 15 minutes at railway station, so it'll not be more than 30 minutes...if you have a taxi lined up at Agra, then it'll take only 10 minutes or so.. If you add travel time of 2 Hrs. it all comes to under 3 hours only... Whereas a car will not take less than 5 hrs.. mat be little more also.

Shatabdi Executive Class offers a comfy Chair car with good leg space at a fraction of Delhi-Agra taxi cost......

Ta members can suggest good and reliable taxi operators at Agra who'll pick you up from Agra Railway Station.

Dear bubi -

If you are not familiar with Delhi and train travel in India, and if you have luggage, please plan to leave your hotel an hour ahead of the train time. I took the Shatabdi this July, we left our hotel at 5:15, and although we were at the station at 5:30, we spent 15 minutes waiting in the car in traffic, it was choked just before the station, and too far to walk with our bags. We were glad for the extra time, or I would have been hyperventilating. Also at that time of the morning, there is no transport other than private taxis, so you have to budget for late arrival of the taxi or emergencies. I would not advise leaving your hotel less than 45 minutes ahead of the train. Leaving your hotel 30 minutes prior to your train, while it works for yogi, does not work for me.

If somebody is not comfortable with close margins, then you can very well come to railway station little before. And even in Day time also, you have nothing but Autos and Taxies as local transport which are available in the morning too !

Traffic jams at such early hours are unheard of, I take Delhi-Dehrtadun shatabdi very often, it starts at 6:50 from New Delhi and I have never found a traffic jam even at that time too ! May be a rare case......

You'll find many people like hotel travel desks, dissuading you from using a train as it earns them commission, but if you decide to travel by train, you'll see that least 50% travelers on on Bhopal Shatabdi & Taj Express are foreign tourists. In Shatabdi Express you get excellent travel experience at Rs. 700 in Executive Chair Car. Shatbadi ticket includes bottled water and breakfast too.

IMO, this can't be beaten by a taxi on Indian roads and a taxi will remain only second best option for me.

You may choose what appeals you !
