Drivers - Bali

Hi,

Now this might be a silly question .... but here goes!

Would you hire a driver for the day and plot out where you want to go, or

Would you hire a driver for short trips (like a taxi)

We have a week in Bali, and want to visit many places but unsure whether to base ourselves in Legian/Kuta and do a couple of day trips using a driver, or spend a couple of nights in a few different places.

Thanks

Not a silly question, actually a logical one.

For shorter trips eg., shopping or around Kuta/Legion/Seminyak, my view a taxi is better.

Longer trips with a driver for the travelling days or get a driver based in the areas you are staying each time, however that sometimes can be a hassle, chopping and changing etc., that would come down to personal choice if you are happy with the one you have and negotation of price.

Sometimes drivers if they are travelling distances will stay with friends or even been known to sleep in the vans, or the accomodation your are staying in puts them up for a fee in staffing accomodation (I know instances where this has happened), however their accomodation is not your concern.

Hope this helps a bit, others may have a varied view, however it should help with your decision making.

Cheers

hello

firstly i would base myself somewhere in legian as you are in between kuta and seminyak. agree for short trips taxi's are the way to go.if you get a good taxi driver[good english and sense of humour] if out shopping tell him to stop the meter and tell him you will give him a fair tip at the end, most are usually obliging.

In the past we have stayed in the Kuta/Tuban area and then done a day trip every second or third day. We were lucky enough to have someone recommended to us who charges $50 a day, who took us to some excellent hot spots along the way to our destination and was also happy to carry our shopping and push the pram etc.

All depends on what you'd prefer. You hear of people staying half/half but for us we prefer to be based in one spot and use the driver.

We have spent a lot of time in bali on trips from Medowi to Mt Agung, Uluwatu to Nusa Dua and naturally Kuta, Seminyak and Legian. We have used both private Bemo drivers and the old blue Taxi's and there are pro's and con's for each.

A good private bemo should cost you no more than $40 AUD per day (all day that is). Our last trip in December 2012, we came across Gede who is a great local chap, used to work at a hotel as a driver and took the punt to run his own company to support his wife and children. Having used many, many drivers in the past, we were very impressed with Gede, his demeanour, exceptional english, safe driving and pleasent nature. We only used Gede to go from Nusa Due to Kuta, but for 70,000rp, ($7 AUD) we didn't even negoatiate the price. Gede is contactable at prabawabali@yahoo.com and his mobile numbers are +6281 7974 2771 or +6282 144 851 028. We don't have any affilaition with Gede and I have never posted about a driver before, but we were so impressed with his service we simply had to promote his business.

As for taxi's, a trip from Seminyak to Kuta should set you back about$2 to $2.50 AUD. Even taxi drivers will try to charge more, so haggle and then haggle some more. We have used both private bemoe and taxi's in Bali and we haven't found any better than the other, with the exception that some taxi drivers are a bit more impatient than Bemo drivers.

If you are going to be in Bali for a while, I would recommend contacting one driver (such as gede) in advance. They can collect you from the airport and will be at your beck and call for your entire trip. You can tell them each day where you are planning on going and if they are interested in taking you short distances, why not use them for everything (we have).

Best of luck and remember, the Bemo with scratches is the Bemo to avoid :)
