I agree, private driver is more confortable. We went back to airport with one, the price was less then what we paid for taxi. The car clean, good A/C and on time.

Personally, if it's your first trip to Bali I'd pay extra for the hotel shuttle service.

A driver with your name on a sign waiting as soon as you walk through customs, direct to your hotel where a welcome drink will be waiting, and into your room.

Sure you can use a taxi from the airport, but there can be a very long line for taxis out of the airport, and when you are tired, hot and not knowing your way around, standing in line for half an hour with all your baggage, then getting a taxi driver who doesn't understand english well, and who also doesn't know where your hotel is...........!

First trip to Bali use the hotel shuttle, next time when you return to Bali with more knowledge and confidence, then use a taxi!

Winylake, if I can explain a little further in the hopes of assisting you:

To get a taxi at the airport, only one taxi company is allowed to service the airport.

- coming from Switzerland the first thing you will notice is the tropical heat, so you will be sweating and no doubt worn out from the flight

- after collecting your baggage and clearing customs you will need to line up with everyone else at the taxi ticket office, as you must buy the ticket prior to getting near a taxi

- as each taxi driver parks at the airport, they will then leave their car and come to the ticket counter where you are waiting

- it is only when a driver arrives that a ticket will then be sold to the next person waiting in line

- once a driver has arrived, you will be sold the ticket, then you will walk out to meet the driver on the other side and be taken to the car

- You must understand that you are now on Bali time, and things in Bali dont happen quickly, so you may well be standing in line with everyone else for quite some time until you finally get to the front of the queue....I recently waited over 45 minutes in line waiting on drivers to arrive and to get to my turn at the front of the queue

- Have the name and address of the hotel written down, and also have the telephone number on hand, as the driver may not speak english, and may not know the exact location of the hotel......it may pay to get him to make a call, whereby hotel staff can explain the location to him in Bahasa, saving a lot of time and a lot of driving around in circles

This is the reason why I suggest the hotel shuttle may be far faster and easier for you if it's your first trip, even if it costs twice the price of a taxi

If he is unsure of the location or you dont have the address (some hotels in Ubud can be difficult to find, and many have very similar names which can also cause confusion), get him to drop you at the bottom of Monkey Forest Rd. It is a one way street, and you can then change to a local driver who will know exactly where the hotel is. The local driver will only charge $2 US.

On your return from Ubud back to the airport you can use any one of the many many local Ubud drivers, which you will then find much cheaper than the hotel shuttle, as Ubud does not have metered taxi's, only local drivers (and they are all good, with hundreds to choose from).

You will use many local Ubud drivers for short trips around town during your stay, and they can be found anywhere and everywhere as soon as you leave your hotel. They will all also all offer their card/phone number to entice you to use them again, plus they are quite cheap (20,000-40,000 rupiah around town).

For your return to the airport, ask them how much to the airport, then barter the price down a little.
