Probably the best guide in Tangkoko Nature Reserve

Myself and my fiance have just been to Tangkoko Nature Reserve in North Sulawesi. We were very fortunate to have a fantastic guide and wanted to share his contact details.

His name is Iwan and he is one of the best guides we've ever encountered. He speaks good English, is friendly, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the animals in the Tangkoko reserve. Apparently, unlike most of the other guides, he works with a research project in the reserve, tracking the black macaque monkeys to observe and record their behaviour, and so he has a deep understanding of them and their habits and can easily lead tourists to find large groups of monkeys.

We visited the reserve with Iwan twice and it was one of the highlights of our 6 weeks in Indonesia. First we went in between 4-8pm and saw cuscus and tarsiers, and then we returned in the morning between 5-8am to see hornbill birds and Black Macaques (monkeys). As far as we know, we were the only tourists that evening who saw the cuscus. (Everyone sees tarsiers.) And we got to spend lots of time with 2 different groups of monkeys. There were a few other tourists when we saw the first group, but we were the only tourists visiting the second group.

If you want to contact Iwan, his details are at the website below. We were on a tour, so didn't book him directly, but he told us that he can organise transport from Manado and accommodation around Tangkoko, as well as guiding people in the reserve. Even if you arrange the other stuff yourself, we'd recommend that you book Iwan to be your guide.

Hi Nyssa and Sean, good of you to come back here and clarify things a little.

It did look a bit odd and it is good that you understand there are often somewhat questionable contributions here.

To ensure that people are not mislead a degree of skepticism is often applied to glowing reports on a provider from contributors who have not yet established a contribution history.

Please don't be put off by the reactions above, there are just a lot of self promotional efforts on the Forums in some regions, and some of them are very well crafted. Sadly it casts an unfortunate shadow of suspicion on many genuine ones.

You provided an informing and well written report on your experience, hopefully you will be contributing here some more, and glad to hear the 'shyness' has been sufficiently dispelled.

Iwan seems to have made a very good impression on several people who have interacted with him.

It was nice to read your travel blog, do keep writing, you have a nice way of telling a story.

Nys_R: Glad you had such a good experience and thanks for posting. I am curious however, since this happens so often on TA. Why did you only post a referral to your guide and not more information or details of your trip? I see you posted your guide's blog, but it's also a great help to travellers to have more information such as how to get there, where to stay, places to eat, and so forth.

Since you had a nice trip, perhaps you could share information on the other islands you visited as well?

Yes, I would like to see that as well, especially as the OP has a clear flair to recounting a travel story.

ubudpuppy, j_hurcules: Thanks for the nice comments. I often have good intentions to write reviews on TA and other sites, but rarely find the time. I will endeavour to do better on future trips!

Another first time poster who just happened to come across this thread and move it to the top. Amazing how often that happens with certain threads.
