Query on Medan / Lake Toba...

Hello Ppl,

Visiting Medan in June. Have a few Queries....

1. How to get from medan airport to Parapat/Lake tobo? How much would a taxi from the airport roughly cost and if am taking a bus where from should i find one in medan and how much would it cost?

2. would 2 days be enough to expore samosir island? and if so what are the key places to see on the island if one is interested in batak culture and history?

3. Are there bike rentals available to go around samosir island or whats the best mode of transport to explore samosir island?

4. What will the weather be like during june in and around toba?

5. If am staying a night in medan, whats the best way to check out the sights in medan? Are there local tuk-tuks or do i need to hire a cab or a bike for a day to check out all the sights in medan?

would be much glad to hear back from u ppl..

Thanks..

1. About 500,000rp by taxi. By bus you can take a bus from the airport to Amplas bus station then another to Lake Toba. Not too difficult, as long as you don't arrive too late in the day

2. It's enough. There are museums and traditional archictecture and so on, you can check wikitravel or something, plenty of info out there.

3. Bicycle and motorbike, yes. Both are good.

4. Sumatra is ok all year round.

5. Tuktuks, known as becaks are in Medan yes, many of them. However taxis are better/cheaper if you can find one (not as plentiful as the becaks). For a day's touring it's possible to actually hire a metered taxi, and they can wait for you on the meter. I'm not exactly sure the cost of this, but I think the waiting time per hour is not too expensive , but obviously more than using individual point-to-point becaks. Try and plan your route on Google maps paying attention to Medan's annoying one-way system to avoid long loops - Medan traffic is heavy and you want to minimise time on the road.

2. Re: Query on Medan / Lake Toba...

thanks for posting this to the thread instead of just PM to me...

i will just fill in here and then from somewhereinlondon answers......

2 days is enough, some usual suspects is tomok market (and king's tomb), tuk-tuk (you will most probably stay here), stone chair ambarita, simanindo museum, pangururan hot spring, and a little bit far away up the hill back to the mainland is tele viewing tower

bicycle and bike rental are allover tuk-tuk and yes they are the best mode since the road there is pretty small

june will be hot (so does anytime of the year)

as mention our "tuk-tuk" (not to be confused with the area named tuk-tuk in samosir island) is called a "becak". if you are going to hop on and off quite a lot i suggest you strike a deal with the becak driver for a half or full day trip. and don't pay him anything until the end of the trip. if you have bags with you make sure you put it on the inside on the seat. putting valuable facing the outside of the becak is an open invitation for snatchers and they are all over. cases of people's valuable (and sometime the person get pulled along too) being snatch off a becak is plenty in medan. so be careful

Hi Imoetbiz

Now, we just have to take your word for it that your company is the best. Unfortunately not all guests seem to agree with you see for example some posts in:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g297725-i9610-k562…

As such it could be helpful if you not only provide the details of your transporter but also how the other transporters in Parapat which offer similar packages can be contacted.

Please provide full contact details, including contact persons, phone numbers etc of Bagus Tour & Travel, Tobali Tours and any other you can think of in Parapat so the guest can make a well informed comparison of services and costs.

May I suggest that especially Rafatheking, Gadong_11, Ricky, but also Victor, Alamsyah, Sonya131, Sidik138 and Apulungan do not use this opportunity and thread to make another effort to promote their transporter, just to keep this thread as clean as possible.

9. Re: Query on Medan / Lake Toba...

As normally Iboetzin is not answering questions for other information, only referring to his Parapat Taxi Provider, let me copy my earlier response to a similar question.

Over the last weeks I have been putting in quite some time on finding the Taxi Mafia in Parapat. Maybe our new friend in this Forum Raja The King has an idea other than blaming Victor as follows in another thread:

Hi victor

Advertise for your own travel company?

This is forum, not for search guest to your company.

What an excellent observation and as such a most valuable contribution to this forum. You may wish to share this observation with especially Gadong_11 and Imoetbiz. Don’t forget to copy Ricky and yourself on such communication. You may consider to inform Alamsyah, Sonya131, Sidik138, Sidik, Anjasmara759, 171Nessen and Apulungan as well.

So now some information copied from an earlier post in another thread on :

PARAPAT TRANSPORT – TOUR & TRAVEL

Note: I copied the following from the business cards and give for all of them the same information as far as where they are based in Parapat and Medan and how to contact them. As not all of them have websites and e-mail addresses I refrain from this information to give every Taxi Transporter the same and fair chance.

TOBATRANSPORTER

REMARKS

From guests which I meet in the Warung in Tuk Tuk during my sunset beers, I hear good stories and bad stories of all the transporters listed above. Generally speaking, I think that all of them try to do their level best to make the guests happy, but sometimes something can go wrong. Especially during unexpected Top Season Holidays, such as the recent weekend May 24 – 28, when all the cars of all the transporters above were on the road between Medan and Parapat, standing still in one off the many traffic jams. (Ref Post 23 above). I hear the worst stories from Guests which want to make the most of their sometimes limited budget and as such going for the cheapest bargain. I am not so sure this is WISE. Also generally speaking, if you pay a bit more, you will get more for your money.

Not related to the above listed Transporters.

If you make a deal with individuals in Medan or Parapat for a tour or transport for less than Rp 450.000,-- per day, you are in for trouble, and sorry to say when you tell me all what happened to you, you may not find the sympathic ear you are hoping for. Because no transporter or tour operator can for this money provide you with a reliable car and a well rested, well fed driver.

HORAS !!!! HORAS !!!!! HORAS !!!!! Welcome to Lake Toba and now I like to Quote Artemio 'TRAVEL WISE"

10. Re: Query on Medan / Lake Toba...

About a month ago I had in mind to respond to question Nr 4 in the first post of Veepy 5, as I was not fully satisfied with the answers of SWIL and Arte. Unfortunately, I lost track of the thread because of other posters needed to post their most valuable information to many other threads. Now thank you Rafatheking bringing this thread up front again.

So let’s together concentrate on question nr 4 of Veepy 5 in his first post.

‘What will the weather be like during june in and around toba?’

As it is still not yet June I still have two days to respond to the question, which I already intended to do about a month ago, but had to give way to more important valuable contributors to this Forum.

Now, Rafa the King, specialist in Parapat taxi’s, you must also be a specialist in the Parapat and Lake Toba weather, coming June, and we are most anxious to learn your response to question 4 of Veepy5.

You can possibly start with informing us what is the weather is at this moment in Parapat, 21.20 h, May 29, and how it was at the same time yesterday.

As I found the thread again I will respond to the question of Veepy5, before or on the first of June.

Should you wish, as part of that I am also ready to report on the weather at this moment and yeaterday evening same time in Parapat.

HORAS !!! HORAS !!! HORAS !!! WELCOME TO PARAPAT, WELCOME TO USE ANY TRUST WORTHY PARAPAT TAXI OPERATOR.
