Christmas

Hi All

Thanks for everyone who contributes to this forum. I have had such great advice in manay places from TripAdvisor!

OK, we are a family of 4 with two well-travelled soon-to-be 6 year old boys. We shall be flying in from Qatar and hope to be in Sri Lanka for about 10 days at Christmas.

We always try to find hotels with 2 bedroom villas or adjoining rooms. Some kind of set up where we can have the kids close but give us a reasonable amount of privacy would be great.

We are interested in staying in Galle. Our budget is reasonable but not insanely big! We like the beach but the kids are pretty interested in snorkelling and seeing some of the local wildlife and culture.

Any general suggestions, based on tihs info?

Many thanks

Hi Becca,

Basically Galle has no beach to speak of, and most SL hotels do offer 'family rooms' (adjoining). Some options not too far from Galle but with decent beach:

* Unawatuna Beach Resort, U'tuna (5 km from Galle)

* Fortress, Koggala (around 10 km)

* Adithiya boutique hotel, Rathgama (around 8 km)

But lots of other (more affordable or less so) places between Hikkaduwa and Koggala...

All the best,

H Becca,

As Erik has said, there's no beach in Galle so if you stay there and the kids want to swim in the sea or snorkell, then you'll have to travel for it every time.

Unawatuna is the nearest recognised place to Snorkell but it has the draw back of a very narrow beach.

Hikkaduwa is the best place as in some places the reef , with good coral cover and an excellent variety of colouful fish can be snorkelled just a few yards out from the beach. In those close in places, if the kids had tom they could be swimming among the fish but in an emergency could stand up .

Also a good chance of snorkelling with turtles where they come in to feed of the reef.

Wildlife is not prolific around there but as well as the turtles you may see a few monkeys, maybe a monitor or two and there's usually plenty of Mongooses running around early morning, especially along the railway track.

Sounds to me that the coral Sans hotel might suit you.

As Rod says Hikkaduwa would be good but personally I'd go for Mirissa about 40 mins south of Gall. Beautiful beach, laid back atomosphere, no hassle from touts, good snorkelling and if the waves are dumping there's a bay at the east end where it is usually calm and great for families.

You could try Sunset Guest House or Paradise Beach Club - both right on the beach.

Dear Rod

Thanks very much indeed. I think you're right! How rough is the sea at Christmastime? Obviously, inside the reef should be protected..

Much rain?

Thanks again

Xmas to March is the best time of the year for swimmers. On most beaches the sea is well swimmable, also outside the reef area!

All the best,
