Just came back from almost 3 weeks in Taiwan. If you are going to Alishan or outer islands, like Green Island or Xiao Liuqui, Chung Hwa is a better choice. I used Dageda and had problems at these 3 places, totally zero connection. Had tried Chung Hwa during last trip and it has the best coverage. Also confirmed by driver in Taiwan, both Chunghwa and Yuantong much better.

chung hwa is also available at the airport?

besides airport, where else can we buy these cards? as flight reaches early at 6am, was thinking if it is easily available elsewhere, then will not waste time to wait for them to open.

Yes, Chung Hwa open at 7am.

You will need 2 ID to apply for prepaid card.

1 passport and NRIC/ driver license.

Same, arrive at 530am, hopefully I can take the 640am or latest 7am UBUS to catch my HSR at 739am.

Is the sims card available at HSR station in Taoyuan or Taichung?

Thanks all for whatever advice given.

I will be travelling to taiwan on 18 September 2014, the flight arrival will be 5.30am. I would like to get any suggestions if I should wait til 7am to get the sim card from airport (from Chung Hwa Telecom) or should i just proceed to my next destination at Cingjing? Will I be able to get the sim card elsewhere?

The rates among three companies were about the same, I chose the shorter line. CHT, plan B NT$300, unlimited 5 days data , including $50 equivalent voice plan. I was hoping to use Google voice for the international call, but it didn't work. The $50 voice plan was pretty much gone by day 2.

Later I found

1. the mobile service is based on CHT "ideal card" or pay go plan, if you keep a balance, the number is good for 180 days.

2. if you used up voice, you can purchase more minutes from stores, or local CHT branches, if you buy larger refill card, and it usually has extra bonus minutes.

3. if you decide to extend your trip, you can dial 359, and follow the voice prompt to buy more "discounted data plan". If you don't buy "discounted data plan", the normal data rate plan is extremely expensive under this "pay go" plan.
