Focus In Africa

My wife and I and three other couples just returned from a 10 day photo safari coordinated by Nelson Mbise, director of Focus in Africa. We were very pleased and cannot say enough about our safari. We started researching organizations a year ago, and a local physician recommended Focus in Africa after experiencing a positive and successful trip and climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro. We found Focus in Africa to be priced reasonably, and we enjoyed the same lodging that many of the more expensive tour companies used. We felt that by dealing directly with Nelson, we were cutting out the "middle man" and contributing directly to the local economy. We were met at the airport by Herman and Stewart, and taken directly to our lodging in Arusha where we had the opportunity to rest before commencing our safari the next day. We had previously wired a 25% deposit, and we paid the remainder the first morning when we met Nelson at our lodge. During the course of our stay, we visited Arusha National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park, and the Tarangire National Park. We stayed at the Karama Lodge in Arusha, Lake Manyara Hotel, Ngorangoro Farm House, Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Ngorangoro Wildlife Lodge, Bougainvillae Safari Lodge, and the Tarangire Safari Lodge. All were excellent, but the Ngorangoro Farm House and Bougainvillae Lodge were especially remarkable. Our drivers and guides, Herman and Stewart, were patient, observant, friendly, and did a remarkable job. With their help we photographed the "big 5", and many other animals we never would have spotted on our own. On the last day of our trip, at Nelson's suggestion, we visited the Good Hope School and Orphanage, which was especially inspiring. We would not hesitate to recommend Focus in Africa to anyone desiring a positive Tanzanian experience.

We did a five days northern circle safari in Tanzania with Focus in Africa in the month of August. It was a very disappointing experience.

The Italian guide we had asked for could barely speak Italian and understand our questions. He mostly had a high pitched confronting rude tone of voice which made it impossible for us to fully communicate with him or having a conversation without misunderstanding each other. On the last night he even reminded us we were supposed to tip him! He complained several times of Nelson – the owner of Focus in Africa - as someone who was not paying him enough, hoping we would sympathize with him. Those were very uncomfortable instances.

The driver we were assigned, who was also the owner of the car, kept on repeating the whole time how tired he was and he tried to cut short on our stops to see the wildlife. The car got once stuck in Serengeti because the 4 wheel wasn’t working. We were rescued by another vehicle. The engine of the car was not fitted for a 9 spots car and it was quite weak uphill, which meant our trip took longer.

One of the tents we were given had a hole which resulted in it being wet during a rain splash. One of the sleeping bag we were given was broken and we were not provided with any pillows. All the tents missed some nails which meant that they tended to get water inside more easily and were more shaky to the wind.

Leaving Serengeti and entering Ngongoro we waited more than one hour at the gate because Nelson had not sent the payment of 250USD to exit the park. We were asked to chip in money, but we refused. We had wired the full sum of 750 USD each for the safari before reaching Tanzania.

During the night at the Ngongoro campsite our guide and the driver disappeared, which meant we ate outside in the freezing cold.

The cook was actually the only respectable person we had the chance to interact with and his food was outstanding considering the challenging conditions.

Finally when we reached Arusha and we had to fly off the following morning no one showed up to take us to the airport and we had to pay 50USD extra to reach the airport.

It was a very stressful experience. The owner of the company Nelson Mbise doesn’t seem to own anything, he just contracts people for the cheapest possible amount of money. He told us on the phone on the morning we had to be taken to the airport that the transfer was not included in the contract. We had never seen or signed any contract.

All in all we discourage you to do a safari with this company. We felt cheated and treated very badly.
