Kantary Beach, Khao Lak with teenagers

Hi,

I've had a good look but don't see much about holidaying in the area with teenagers (13 and 14). The place looks absolutely perfect but as we are planning on going in August I am a bit concerned that much of what we would have enjoyed; eating out, elephant trips and snorkelling will be completely out of the question. Any advise gratefully received?

Oh man I had just written you a reply when my computer timed out… grrrr.

Anyway Hi there,

We stayed at the Kantary Beach Resort in Khao Lak just last month. Absolutely a gorgeous spot if you’re after plenty of rest and relaxation. There are 3 beach restaurants about a 5 minute walk from Kantary to choose from but apart from Kantary’s own restaurant, that’s about it. You can venture out into the main town of Bang La On as it has a lot more restaurants and shops to choose from.

Unfortunately the Similan Islands will be closed for snorkelling in August. We were there on the first day it opened this year in November and the islands and snorkelling are absolutely beautiful!!! Have you heard about Khao Sok National Park? It’s not too far from Khao Lak and from what I’ve heard it’s absolutely gorgeous with lots of activities to choose from (haven’t been there yet but it’s on our to-do list). Sorry I can’t give you any advice on elephant trips as I have not done them there.

I’m a bit concerned your teens might get a bit bored as it’s fairly quiet there. Have you thought about splitting your time between Khao Lak and the more busier Phuket? All the activities you want will be available in Phuket. You can stay in fairly quieter beach areas such as Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin etc or the busier beach area of Patong. We stayed in Phi Phi Islands in August for a few nights and were very fortunate to have great weather and did a lot of island hopping and snorkelling. Fantastic! Yes Phi Phi can be busy but it wasn’t too bad in August. I think your kids will enjoy the range of activities that’s readily available in Phuket.

Enjoy your holidays!

Cheers, Coco

As Coco says, the only thing out of the question will be snorkelling at the Similan or Surin Islands although there will be tours offering it at other places. You can also go down to Phang Nga Bay (about 1 hour) where I'm sure your teens will enjoy a trip out into the Bay including sea kayaks. These sea kayak excursions only last about 30 - 45 mins but there are other more specialist tours of longer duration exploring, the Bay, the Hongs and the mangroves.Have a look here for example http://www.seacanoe.net/ or plenty of info if you Google Sea Kayaking Phang Nga Bay.

Also in this area of Phang Nga are ATV tours and White Water rafting. See phuket.com/magazine/atv-rafting-phangnga.htm

Do they like sea fishing? Green Andaman Travel is owned by an experienced local guide and fisherman and will provide fishing and other more personalised excursions. See phuket.com/magazine/atv-rafting-phangnga.htm

Khao Sok, one hour north to the main National Park entrance and an hour further to the awesome Rachaphrapha Dam and Chow Lan Lake, offers elephant treks, raft riding on the river, trekking through the rain forest, longtail boat trips across the Lake, where you can stay overnight in a floating raft house, jumping into and swimming in the lake directly from your raft house. Plenty of info on the Khao Sok Forum at tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowForum-g1657011-i16537-…

All of this is available from Khao Lak.

However, even though plenty of restaurants will be open in Bang Niang (10 minutes) or Bang La On (15 mins) down the road by taxi/hotel shuttle, the Kantary and area will be quiet and rather than splitting your holiday, you may wish to consider a resort in those areas. The Ramada or La Flora for instance on Bang Niang Beach or the Nang Thong Bay Resort (beachfront bungalows are highly recommended) on Nang Thong Beach just down the road from Bang La On Centre. Alternatively, the pool access rooms at the Merlin on Khao Lak Beach, 10 minutes back over the hill towards Phuket are worth looking at. Nice beach with nice walks along to the adjacent Poseidon Beach and restaurants in the vicinity.

I'd stay in Khao Lak - but I would say that, wouldn't I? :-)

Haha of course you'd say that Alan but then again sitting here in my 2x2m squared office partition under hideous fluorescent lights, I don't blame you :-)

Khao Lak must be absolutely gorgeous right now.... do make me even more green with envy and share some more gorgeous pics, specially island piccies. Really wanted to visit Tachai Island but ran out of time :-(

Hi there,

So many thanks for this info (especially writing it twice Coco!). I think we are going to split - 4 days Phuket (Andaman Seaview near Karon and 10 days Khao Lak at Kantaray). It is a shame about the snorkelling as the kids love to snorkel but the kayaks, fishing and everything else you suggested certainly look like we'll have plenty to do. The floating raft house sounds fabulous!

I feel reassured that R & R for us mixed with a flurry of activity and fabulous eating experiences (more research required by me for the ultimate Thai food!) can be acheived!

Many thanks once again

Plenty of information on dining options in the FAQ on the right "Where do we find most restaurants?" and under More on Khao Lak - Restaurants on the right.

Hi Amanda, I have just been researching the Kantary beach as well, we are going in May 2012. The best price I found was around $55 AUD per night including breakfast for the villa...excellent value about double that on other websites. The one I found it on was Think2Travel.com....goodluck
