Hotel Choices...please help

It is our first time to Khao Lak and we are really confused at the best area to stay. Definately don't want to be in Bang La On, as prefer quiter resort, but want a good 4* hotel directly on the beach, where we can walk to a few good quality local restaurants in the evening, hopefully where we can catch some lovely sunsets. Been looking at the Merlin which seems to tick the right boxes, as it it is not too far to Bag La On also for a few nights out...can someone please let us know if this is a good choice, or any other recommendations along the same kind of price range would be of help...

Hi,

First when are you planning on going and what is your budget for accommodation as this will help with recommendations.

Bang La On is the main township with most restaurants and shops but the beach resorts are down about a 10 minute walk on Nang Thong Beach. The other large (for Khao Lak but still small) township is Bang Niang 5-10 minutes by taxi up the highway with a greater number of resorts on or just back from the beach with a great choice of restaurants both on or overlooking the beach (great for sunsets) and on the nearby roads upto and on the highway. Tends to be quieter as many go to Bang La On for shopping then dinner or vice versa. The main market is here 3 days a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. It has a better range of resorts that should also tick your boxes than the lovely Khao Lak Beach where the Merlin is located.

Have a look at latest map for Bang Niang at http://www.t3x.de/khaolak/BangNiangmap.htm

Resorts to consider of at least equivalent standard to the Merlin at Bang Niang are:

The Ramada and La Flora - excellent 4* resorts on best part of beach and great access to restaurants etc.

The Chong Fah Resort - small boutique 3* resort with excellent reputation and very popular with repeat bookers.

Thank You for this...we are arriving at the end of February for 10 days, so am sure almost all restaurants will be open. Last year we went to Goa and loved

eating out at the local restaurants and the beach shacks which is what we looking for again...although we do like a bit of luxury in our hotel. Have found a good price for the Flora, which is only working out about £100 more than the Merlin for both of us for 10 nights, I think probably this may be a better option...do you agree? My husband is also a bit fidgety and likes a good walk along the beach, while I read my books...am I right in thinking the beach is better and longer near the Flora and probably a better choice of restaurants? Thank You again for your reply and for all your other useful links

I think you would like La Flora, we stayed there last year and will go back again. The beach is nice and there are a few shack restaurants. It is just a short walk into Bang Niang with a choice of shops and more restaurants.

The beach directly by the Merlin is very nice but relatively small with an unpassable headland at one end but going south onto the unspoiled Poseidon Beach, so good walking opportunities and if you are prepared to go into Bang La On as well there are enough dining opportunities for 10 days.

This is Khao Lak Beach including shots of the Merlin frontage https:/…

However, by the Flora there are far more dining opportunities and a greater variety of cuisines plus miles and miles of beaches for walking in both directions.

This is Bang Niang Beach including frontage by La Flora https:/…

Hope this helps.

You could also price the ramada which is next door to La Flora. It is a lovely hotel

If walking along the beach towards the Poseidon, you can walk left up the stone steps pass the little villas and then follow the track and turn right onto the road and follow it out onto the main highway turn left and follow it back to the Merlin.

Along the way you will have the beautiful beach and then through the rain forrest where the villas are. Sometimes you will pass elephants eating on the side of the road with their handlers, and you pass through a little village before approaching the main highway. Its a loverly walk early in the morning before it gets too hot, sometimes you also hear the monks chanting through the hills its just beautiful.
