Which beach area in Khao Lak?

Hello lovely helpful/knowledgeable types,

I will be in Khao Lak for a week in early April. I have read that there is still a certain amount of regeneration going on after the Tsunami, and I am keen to avoid any areas that are like building sites (as I live in Doha I get to live on a giant building site every day at home!) Can you advise on a lovely beach area to stay at, but with a reasonably lively and interesting town attached - preferably walking distance or a short cab ride? We don't need hedonistic nightlife but a good selection of restaurants, bars and shopping would be appreciated. I am going round in circles at the moment and can't make a decision!

Also is there any sailing in Khao Lak or is it too rough? Will we be ok in the sea in early April so long as we don't go out too far? Thanks so much.

I think you have been misinformed about regeneration work as a result of the Tsunami. There is development taking place in various places but this is because Khao Lak is receiving a substantial amount of much needed and much deserved inward investment. That is not to say it is full of construction sites and the main beach areas, over 25km pf them, are largely construction free. Have you seen the pics of the beaches at tripadvisor.co.uk/…47060669

There are no marinas in or near Khao Lak so there is no sailing from the area.

The two main townships are Bang La On with Nang Thong Beach being easy walking distance from it and 10 minutes up the highway Bang Niang with its own beach.

Have a look at this list of accommodation by area throughout Khao Lak www.seadragondivecenter.com/accommodation.htm and this map showing the areas khaolakyellowpages.com/wordpress/…

An idea of your budget for accommodation and the standard you are looking for will help with some suggestions for you.

Hi, thanks for that - it puts my mind at rest. We have a reasonably healthy budget but do not really want to go anywhere as fancy as the Meridien -we would prefer somewhere with a bit more character to it, and it would be nice to get a bit of a bargain. Having said that we don't want to rough it either! We will have a young teenager with us so a couples only type resort is not really appropriate. I looked at the Kantary Beach Resort as the beach there looked great but it seems a bit too generic and soulless in style, and a bit of a trek from restaurants etc. My main concern is the surrounding areas - a pleasant selection of bars and restaurants and a bit of atmosphere within easy reach of the hotel, but nowhere too tacky, loud, or over-commercialised.

hi regarding hotels what about considering the la flora or ramada in bang niang with a good selection of restaurants within walking distance and you could probably hire a hobie cat. from the hotels for a spot of sailing.

or you could even consider the new sands resort in khao lak town ( bang la on )again with a good selection of bars and restaurants within walking distance.

I would recommend La Flora too having stayed there twice. It is in a great spot, on the beach with many eating places and a short walk in to Bang Niang for more restaurants and shops. The Ramada looks lovely too and is next door to La Flora .
