The LEaf or NangThong Bay with 2 kids (11, 8)

we are coming to thailand! now I am torn where to stay in Khao Lak.. we will probably spend a few days getting away from it all and snorkelling and diving in Golden Buddha Beach resort then come to Khao lak itself.. I am torn between The Leaf and NangTHong Bay.. we dont like massive resorts, we want to be able to walk to restauants not be stuck in the hotel..and will have the kids in our rooms so anyone stayed at both or can give us feedback.. price seems pretty similar.

pros and cons please.

I was having the exact same dilemma.

The Leaf:

Pro - breakfast included

Con - not on the water

Nang Thong (1 & 2):

Pro - on the water

Con - no breakfast

Big con unfortunately once we factor all our other expenses!

The Cousin Resort where we stay and the Ayara Villas just down from it in Bang Niang both have family bungalows. Both are one road back from the beach and within easy walking distances of the many restaurants, bars and shops in Bang Niang.

We have stayed at NTBR1 4 times in 2 years and have met many families with young children staying there who absolutely love the place. As far as breakfast goes, if you eat at NTBR1 it isnt that expensive. We had 4 adults there last year and the breakfasts we had there were between 400-600baht all up for all of us. You can also walk next door to Green Beach Resort and have brekkie with your feet in the sand for half the price.

We stayed at both in jan/feb this years. Both have pros and cons- obviously! NtBR1 we stayed in the family apartment which was lovely and had plenty of room for 5 of us (me & hubby, granny & 3& 2 yr old boys. It was across the road but the road wasn't busy and it didn't affect us too much. Going to the pool was like an outing though as it wasn't really practical to keep running backwards & forwards. Pros- restaurant on site was handy for snack & lunch, the kids loved the golf buggy up to supermarket & highway, loads within 5 mins walk, 2 mins to beach. Cons- the family apartment didn't really suit us as we couldn't really sit out when kids were in bed, the pool could get a bit on noisy sit for the kids.

Cousin resort is much more quiet low key and less of the frills as it hasn't really a restaurant on site to speak of. The family rooms here are excellent with loads of room and you can happily sit out at night when the kids were el zonkio! The pool is so quiet that it was great for us as the kids liked the peace (even though they loved making most of the noise). Cousin is sit a road back for the beach but with 5 mins you have lots of eating options, a bit further about 10/15 mins then you are on the main beach road with all the lovely options there too.

Next year we are going back to cousin for 2 weeks after spending a week at the leaf. That's not to say we didn't like NTBR1 but in terms of the family accommodation we preferred cousin. You may want to consider splitting your time between both as bang la on/ nang thong is a different experience to Biang niang. Personally I liked having a week when we arrived having options on site so we didn't have to venture too far when the kids were knocked of kilter by the heat and then having the second week somewhere else!

that is all so helpful thank you very much.. we dont mind being a walk from the beach as we are spending the first 5 days in the area at Golden Buddha which is all about the beach.. these days we want a pool and chill out so it sounds like Cousins might suit us. at Nangthong is there a balcony we can sit on when the kids are asleep? we really need that as we like to sit and have a rum and coke once the kids are asleep. we dont need fancy. we like to wander out for dinner too. is there a fridge for snacks?

thanks again

There is a balcony in the NTBR1 family room but it's attached to the room with the 2 single beds (in the room we were in anyway) so it meant that the kids were in those beds and we were sneaking out to sit a foot from them! The other room has the king size bed but no balcony. Both rooms have a fridge! Also the bathroom (which is hug) can be accessed from both rooms but only one door has a lock on it. Great fun for kids not so much for the person on the loo!

As far as I can remember there wasn't much difference in price between family rooms at both resorts. At Cousin you get heaps more space (2 bedrooms and a giant livingroom with a kitchen alcove with giant fridge, toaster an kettle like thing! We preferred this as we could have breakfast with the kids inside then they could play outside on balcony & garden while we finished ours. It meant that we didn't have to worry about going out for breakfast just skip 6 steps or so to the pool!
