Khao Lak in January...

Hi,

I'm contempalting visiting a couple of smaller Islands in Jan' 15 rather than revisiting Phuket/Samui as is usual.

Khao Lak is very much in the frame, as is Ko Lanta/Ko Chang as well as Chaing Mai.These are all places I have yet to place a foot on so I feel it's time.

Question is this; Whilst in no way a 'party animal' and accepting that these less developed Islands are likely to be quieter than Karon or Lamai, I am concerned that they may be just a little too quiet.

January in London is...Crap weather wise so, need a little warmth and hopefully a couple of beers and some interesting conversation in order to forget Blighty.

Will I find this in Khao Lak?

Budget is £50-80pd to inc' accom' and I have 22 nights to potter about with.

Regards

Phil

Hi

First, Khao Lak is not an island. Koh or Ko means island in Thai. Khao Lak is about an hour north from Phuket Airport on the Andaman Coast. 25km of glorious, unsoiled and non-commercialised beaches with accommodation throughout to mett all budgets and cuisine to match all tastes. Have a look at the information on the right in the Top Questions and use I would suggest Booking.com to search for accommodation for your dates and budget and come back for more information on any you fancy.

Apologies, you are indeed right Khao Lak is not an Island!

Today has been interesting as I think...I've managed to sort out my itinary, finally!

So...How does London to BKK/Phnom Penh - Siem Reap - Khao Lak - Ko Lanta - Hui Hin sound?

There will be lots left for next time to discover.

Arriving New Year's day should also be interesting.

I will also look at Booking.com as you suggested Arandora, ta very muchly!

Personally I would omit Hua Hin and stick on the West Coast in January. Have you given thought to how you plan to transfer between your various destinations and in particular in and out of Cambodia? Flights are most convenient but more expensive especially as with accommodation your first 15 days or so is absolute Peak Season so less availability and highest cost and putting pressure on your budget.

Here is a link to accommodation throughout Khao Lak over the various locations www.seadragondivecenter.com/accommodation.htm At that time and with your budget you are probably looking at low to mid range and bungalow resorts but you may find that a number have limited availability.

As an alternative I would suggest flying into Krabi Airport then on to Ko Lanta, road transfer back to Khao Lak, transfer to Phuket airport at the end for flight back to Bangkok.

Also Chiang Mai is not an island, but definitely worth visiting. I'd put Koh Chang on the list (Hua Hin is not an island either).

Yeah, I get it about the 'Islands', that'll teach me to be loose with my terms and descriptions.

What has been interesting is the suggestion of omiting Hui Hin in favour of Ko Chang. It's location to Bangkok makes sense as travel on the last day should be reasonably managable, in theory at least.

Arandora provides a solution so maybe a rethink is due...

Main flights booked to Phonm Penh on the first so everything else is still up for discussion, return is by way of Bangkok.
